MADAM, THIS YOUR CAKE NO DONE OH!
Those were here sister's words when she sliced the beautiful car cake I made.
About this time two years ago, this my beautiful first time client and neighbour called me, she wanted a cake for her son's one year birthday and it has to be a car.
Car Cake? It was the first time I was getting an order to carve out a car in cake.
You know that feeling when you want to impress a new client knowing fully well that your haters will be present at this event.
Did I tell you her price was absolutely ridiculous for what she wanted? Hmmmm she just kept on emphasizing the birthday will just be marked in Church, no parties because there is no money(the regular tale people give)
I put in all my best in this job and even employed the services of my artistic brother to carve and put all necessary details.
I went as far as making a coconut cake which was more expensive, you won't blame me naa, I wanted to impress my client and get more jobs.
My plan was to finish baking, carve and cover the cake on Friday, then finish up the CSR wheels, mirror, etc o Saturday morning then keep admiring and taking pictures before delivery in the evening so they can have it for church on Sunday.
Suddenly, my phone rang on Saturday morning, and it was my client asking for the cake as the birthday party has started. Hian, this must be a joke. I was never informed about a party on Sunday. Apparently, while she was trying to lie to get a good price, she totally forgot to tell me the cake would be needed on Saturday so I was planning towards delivery on Saturday night in order not to disappoint my client.
Her husband who was not aware of his didn't take t lightly at all. Hmmmm come and see me running helter scepter.
Finally, the cake was at the venue 3 hours after the party had started. I was utterly amazed. It was a big party.
At least I made it and the celebrant got pictures.
I thought I was free until a woman who was supposed tone the client's sister took the cake in to slice and share. Only for to call me in a most frightening manner. Upon entering the kitchen, come see insults, "Madam this your cake no done oh, see as e dey light. How cake go dey scatter like this? Me too dey cake and e go strong well well belle go full."
Another woman answered, "na wetin even dey inside wey dey like saw dust". I immediately knee she was referring to the dessicated coconut I added.
At this time, I was already tired, exhausted and angry. They had created a scene and I could only explain and clear their ignorance, but when you have people who feel they can bake, trust me, you can only do much oo.
I learnt huge business lessons that day.
1. Have a contract form: if she had filled the form herself and written date of delivery, I wouldn't have been blamed.
2. I assumed my client would know what a coconut cake is and like it. My contract form would have stated what cake she wanted and settled that for me.
3. Hmmm at this time, I was still battling low self esteem, so I wasn't confident enough to state my terms with a client and I would go to any length to seek validation and impress anyone.

Bottom line is this, build confidence in you and in your skill. Your clients can smell low self esteem and it will tell in your jobs.
Get help if you have to.
Thanks for reading to the end. I hope I didn't bore you.
