King cake is tied to Epiphany, celebrating the visit of the Three Kings, some historians believe the tradition actually traces back to Roman Saturnalia, a winter festival long before Christianity adopted it.

Green = Faith
Gold = Power
These became the official Mardi Gras colors in 1872.
