Shalom,
" He shall baptize you with the Holy spirit and with fire." John the Baptist.
Here, John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Mashiach, made two prophecies about the Mashiach. And many believed that they were fulfilled on the day of Pentecost or Shavuot. By the way, this was not the first " Pentecost" , which is really Shavuot or the Feast of Weeks. The first Shavuot was as recorded in Exodus chapter 19, where the first Assembly gathered at the Mount Sinai.
What was fulfilled at Pentecost as recorded in Acts 2 was the outpouring of the holy spirit of Elohim. For Yeshua HaMashiach, before ascending to heaven, told them to wait for the promise of the Father. For they shall be "baptize with the Holy spirit" . Yeshua did not mentioned about " the fire". Many confused the "tongues like fire" that rested upon them as the baptism of fire. But that is not correct. As Yeshua HaMashiach said, that was the baptism in the holy spirit. And Yeshua HaMashiach said that they will have authority to witness, from Yerushalayim and to the uttermost part of the earth, that Yeshua is the Mashiach. And that is what the spirit of Elohim is empowering the disciples of Yeshua, to witness that Yeshua, whom they impaled on the tree, is the both Mashiach and Master. On that day of Pentecost, three thousand people believed that Yeshua is the Mashiach. And later, another five thousand people believed in Yeshua as the Mashiach. And all of those believers were Hebrew, or as many people says, were all Jews. There was not one gentile among those early believers in Yeshua as the Mashiach. The first gentile convert was the family of Cornelius. And that was many years later.
John the Baptist gave those two prophecies. But only one was fulfilled at Pentecost. The " baptism with fire" has not yet been fulfilled. The baptism with fire is about the "coming day of judgment".
What John the Baptist meant by the " baptism with fire" or "in fire", he clarified in the very next verse through a beautiful allegory :
" His winnowing fork is in his hands. He will purge his threshing floor and gather his grain into his granary. But the chaff he will burn in a fire that never goes out."
For John the Baptist, like other prophets in the Tanakh , fire was a symbol of judgment. Isaiah wrote," Here comes Yahweh with fire, His chariots are like whirlwind, to vent His anger with fury, His rebuke with flames of fire. For with fire will Yahweh execute judgment." Isaiah 66:15-16. Fire is an awesome thing. And Hebrews 12: 29, quoting from Deuteronomy 4:24, pronounces : " Our God is a devouring fire. " Fire is a perfect symbol of destruction, and thus a figure of judgment.
So there is a coming judgment, a " baptism of fire", as foretold by John the Baptist. Now is a good time to turn to Yahweh as your God and to obey His Torah, His instructions for living in righteousness and holiness. The " times of the Gentiles" is running out very fast. Its time to awake and prepare for the coming of our Master Yeshua HaMashiach.
"Baruch Haba Bshem Yahweh" is Hebrew and means, " Blessed is He who is coming in the name of Yahweh!" Come Yeshua! Bo Yeshua!
