鹤为长寿仙禽，具有仙风道骨，据说，鹤寿无量，与龟一样被视为长寿之王，后世常以“鹤寿”、“鹤龄”、“鹤算”作为祝寿之词。
中国曾在汉代也出现过当官的标准以孝来划分的制度，所以在古代子女像长辈祝寿时经常以鹤为题材，取名为“松鹤长春”、“鹤寿松龄”寓意着老人健康长寿。

丹顶鹤也是鸟类中最高贵的一种鸟，代表长寿、富贵。
人们将鹤精神化、人格化，用来比喻高尚的品德。
古人多用翩翩然有君子之风的白鹤，比喻具有高尚品德的贤能之士，把修身洁行而有时誉的人称为“鹤鸣之士”。
高洁之士自然也就以鹤为伴了，赋予了高洁情志的内涵成为名士高情远志的象征物。
