๐พ A free dog park could soon become a reality in Penang.
The SPCA Seberang Perai is planning to transform part of its shelter grounds in Juru into a dedicated Dog Park, giving both shelter dogs and pet owners a safe space to walk, play and relax.
The proposed park will cover around half an acre and may include walking paths, shaded rest areas, drainage improvements, play equipment and even a small splash pool for dogs that love the water. If completed, it is believed to be the first animal shelter in Penang to offer a dog park open to the public.
According to the shelter management, the idea goes beyond recreation. The park is also intended to provide a more comfortable environment for dog owners who may face challenges finding suitable places to exercise their pets.
The project is estimated to cost around RM15,000 and is currently seeking support to make it happen.
Behind the plans is a shelter already caring for nearly 1,800 rescued animals โ including more than 1,400 dogs and almost 400 cats. Operating costs exceed RM100,000 every month, covering food, medical care, maintenance and staffing.
Despite the challenges, the shelter continues to care for hundreds of animals while working with local authorities on initiatives such as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programmes to help manage stray populations.
If all goes well, the future Dog Park will be open to the public free of charge during shelter operating hours, giving more dogs a place to run, play and simply be dogs. ๐ถ๐
