Lau Kuan Chean, 36, spent nearly 7 years as a designer in Singapore, often working up to 48 hours straight. Realizing this wasn’t the life he wanted, he was inspired by his housemate, a cafe barista, and a book about cafes and bread shops in Okinawa. At 28, Lau began self-learning bread making during weekends, pursuing a passion that offered a more balanced lifestyle.
After six months of practice, he found a job at a bread shop, which gave him the courage to quit his stable job and dive into baking. Over four years, he worked at five different bread shops, mastering both Western and Oriental bread-making techniques. Despite a drastic drop in income, Lau's passion and determination kept him going. He recalls, "I remember switching from body shampoo to soap, and my biggest treat was a chicken drumstick from NTUC."
Four years later, Lau returned to his hometown, establishing a home production studio and supplying local eateries. He now plans to open his own cafe or explore a mobile truck concept. Meet Lau at the next RUANG event to experience his inspiring journey.
