Huat Kuih is a traditional Chinese steamed cake. “Huat” means prosperity in Hokkien language. Therefore it is a prosperity cake! Chinese always like to relate food to good meaning wording. This is to hope that after consumed that food it would bring good luck.

Kuih Lapis | 九层糕

Kuih lapis or also spelled as kueh lapis/kue lapis is a beautiful traditional Nyonya steamed cake which is different from the kek lapis. Kek lapis is baked but kueh lapis is steamed and the ingredients are very different. The term ‘lapis’ simply means layer in Malay referring to the construct of the kueh. Meanwhile, the word kueh/kuih/kue brings the same meaning, a traditional cake or snack. Each layer is steamed with care making it possible to peel the layers without much resistance. That is exactly how the locals love to enjoy this kueh!

‘Pulut tai tai’ or ‘pulut tekan’ is a Nyonya kuih made of fluffy glutinous rice steamed in coconut milk. Pulut tekan literally translates to ‘pressed glutinous rice’. Ang ku kueh is one of the Chinese origin snacks seen as part of Nyonya kueh where it is known as "kue ku" or "angkoo". The ang ku kueh common in Singapore and Malaysia came from the Hokkien side of early Peranakan families. Traditional ang ku kueh is like a tortoise shaped mochi with mung bean paste or crushed peanut filling. 🐢
