[이 한국어 통역 되나요?] EP.08: “KOREAN SLANG JUST DROPPED 🚨”

Hello JK Korean learners! 👋

Have you ever come across a Korean expression that made no sense when translated word-for-word? 🤔

In EP.08 of 「이 한국어 통역 되나요?」, we’re taking a closer look at Korean slang and expressions that can be confusing if you only look at their literal meanings. 💬

You might already know some of these words, but did you know they can also be used in completely different ways?

💬 꺼드럭대다 — when someone acts overly proud or superior
💬 킹받다 — when something is annoyingly ridiculous
💬 억까 — when someone unfairly criticizes or attacks you
💬 긁히다 — when someone’s words hit a sensitive spot
💬 현타 오다 — when you suddenly come back to reality
💬 찐 — when something is genuine or the real deal

They may look confusing at first, but their meanings become much clearer when you understand the context and nuance behind them. 👀
Because understanding Korean isn’t always about finding the perfect translation.

Sometimes, you need to understand the word, the context, and the vibe behind the expression. 🇰🇷💬

💬 Which expression have you heard before?
Have you ever been confused by Korean slang?

[이 한국어 통역 되나요?] EP.07: “ONE FEELING, MANY KOREAN EXPRESSIONS”

Hello JK Korean learners! 👋
October 9 is Hangul Day! 🇰🇷✍️

Hangul Day celebrates Hangul, the Korean writing system, and the unique way it allows Korean to express sounds, words, and subtle feelings.

To celebrate Hangul Day, in EP.07 of 「이 한국어 통역 되나요?」, we’re taking a closer look at one feeling that can be expressed in several different ways in Korean: “서운해.” 💬

You might already know 서운해, but Korean has several ways to express similar feelings:
💬 서운해 — when someone’s actions make you feel hurt or left out
💬 섭섭해 — similar to 서운해, especially with someone close
💬 아쉬워 — when something doesn’t happen the way you hoped
💬 마음이 좀 그래 — a softer, more indirect way to express your feelings
💬 서운한 게 있어 — when you want to bring up something that hurt your feelings

They may sound similar, but each expression can feel a little different depending on the situation and context. 👀
Because understanding Korean isn’t always about finding the perfect translation.
Sometimes, it’s about understanding how Koreans express their feelings. 🇰🇷💬

✨ Happy Hangul Day!
And remember — one feeling can have many expressions in Korean.
💬 Which Korean expression would you use most often?
Have you ever found it difficult to express your feelings in Korean?

[이 한국어 통역 되나요?] EP.06: WHAT'S TRENDING IN KOREA?

Hello JK Korean learners! 👋
This time, 「이 한국어 통역 되나요?」 is taking a look at what’s trending in Korea right now! 👀

Korean trends can spread quickly through social media — from new expressions and memes to unique foods and fun challenges.

You know the feeling when you see something on Korean social media and think:
“Wait… what is that?”
“Why is everyone talking about it?” 🤔

In EP.06, we’re introducing four interesting trends:
Hanjeongsun
🍕 Pizza Seolgi
🍚 Random Bibimbap
🌙 Yajang

Some of these trends may seem random at first, but that’s part of what makes Korean internet culture so fun! 😂
Trends often become popular because they’re fun to watch, easy to try, fun to share, or simply something people want to talk about. 📱💬

So when you come across something unfamiliar on Korean social media, don’t just translate the words.

Sometimes, you need to understand the context behind the trend. 🔎

As Chuseok, Korea’s harvest festival, approaches, we would like to extend our warmest wishes to all our members, supporters, and JOKOers. 🌕

Thank you for being part of our journey in sharing knowledge, culture, and meaningful connections across borders throughout 2026.

In an age of rapidly advancing AI, we believe that human connection, empathy, and genuine warmth remain irreplaceable. JOINUS KOREA will continue to foster meaningful cultural exchange and a culture of sharing, guided by our values of participation, openness, sharing, and autonomy.

Wishing you a joyful and heartwarming Chuseok filled with happiness and laughter!

[이 한국어 통역 되나요?] EP.05: CAN YOU READ KOREAN SIGNS? 🇰🇷👀
Hello JK Korean learners! 👋
Until now, 「이 한국어 통역 되나요?」 has explored Korean expressions and the cultural meanings behind them.

Starting with this episode, we’re taking a slightly different approach! ✨
Instead of focusing only on the cultural meaning of Korean expressions, we’re bringing you the Korean you actually encounter in everyday life in Korea — through images.

Because sometimes, seeing Korean in a real-life context can make it easier and more natural to understand. 👀
You know the feeling when you’re in Korea and suddenly see a Korean sign that looks like:
👁️👄👁️
You might recognize a few Korean words, but putting them together in a real-life sign can be a whole different story. 😂

🚫 출입 금지
📸 사진 촬영 금지
⚠️ 머리 조심

You’ll find expressions like these in museums, subway stations, elevators, restaurants, parking lots, and all kinds of public places around Korea.
And they’re not just “Korean words to memorize.”
They’re part of the Korean you naturally encounter IRL. 👀

That’s what we’re exploring in EP.05 of 「이 한국어 통역 되나요?」 — Korean signs you’ll actually see when you’re out and about in Korea. 🔎🇰🇷
By connecting Korean expressions with real-life places and situations, we hope to make learning Korean more visual, relatable, and useful for your everyday experiences.

So, next time you see a Korean sign, don’t just walk past it.
Try reading it! 👀
💬 Which Korean sign have you seen before but didn’t understand?

Hello JK Korean learners! 👋

Have you ever received a Korean message like “ㅋㅋㅋ”, “ㅎㅎ”, or “ㅠㅠ” and wondered what the person really meant? 👀

If you’re learning Korean, you may already know that ㅋㅋ is commonly used to express laughter and ㅠㅠ represents crying. But Korean texting has a little more nuance than that. 🤔

For example:
👉 ㅋㅋ can mean “LOL,” but it can also make a message feel more playful or casual.
👉 ㅎㅎ can make a message sound softer, warmer, or friendlier.
👉 ㅠㅠ can express sadness, frustration, sympathy, or even an exaggerated reaction.
And the number of characters can matter, too!
ㅋㅋ
ㅋㅋㅋ
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

They may all express laughter, but they don’t necessarily give off exactly the same feeling. 😂

This is one reason why understanding Korean goes beyond simply translating words. Sometimes, the little expressions people add to a message can tell you just as much as the words themselves. 💬

In the fourth episode of 「이 한국어 통역 되나요?」, we’re taking a closer look at ㅋㅋ, ㅎㅎ, and ㅠㅠ and the different emotions and nuances they can carry in Korean conversations.

🌎 What do people use to express laughter or emotions when texting in your country?
🤔 Have you ever misunderstood ㅋㅋ, ㅎㅎ, or ㅠㅠ?
💬 Which Korean texting expression do you find the most interesting?

Hello JK Korean learners! 👋
What does “몇 살이에요?” really mean? 👀🤔
You might think it simply means, “How old are you?”
But in Korea, it can mean more than that. 🇰🇷

For Koreans, asking someone’s age can be a relatively natural part of getting to know them. Why? 🤔
Because age can help determine:
🗣️ How we speak to each other
👤 What we call each other

But… same age = instant banmal? 👀
Not always! ❌
Swipe through to find out why Koreans might ask your age first! 🇰🇷👀

And now we want to hear from YOU! 🌎
Would you feel comfortable if someone you just met asked, “How old are you?”
Is asking someone’s age common in your country?

Hello JK Korean learners! 👋
What does “밥 한번 먹어요” really mean? 🍚👀
You might think it simply means, “Let’s have dinner sometime.”

But in Korea, it can mean more than that. 🤔
Sometimes, “밥 한번 먹어요” means:
🍚 “Let’s actually eat together!”
But sometimes, it can simply mean:
👋 “It was nice seeing you!”
🤝 “Let’s stay in touch!”

So… should you save the date? 👀
Just like “눈치,” understanding this expression means looking beyond the words and reading the context.
