The story of the PISTOLET dates back to the 17th century when Belgium was part of the Spanish empire. The origin of the name is somewhat unclear, some say it derived from pistole, the nickname of the gold coin of Carlos Quinto. (Yes, in those days you had gold for money, not currency or mpesa). In truth, at the time, the small bun was so abusively taxed that it cost a gold coin – the pistole. Perhaps this is the connection? Another theory may be from the Latin name meaning miller, baker, breadmaker – pistor. Or possibly it could be a reference to the little pistol guns that pirates used to have, pistolets? But that’s a bit of a stretch!

INTRODUCING THIS BELGIAN BREAKFAST STAR IN NAIROBI!
Early every Sunday morning in Brussels, queues form at all the bakeries, sometimes stretching into the streets.
People are waiting are in line for Pistolets, a small, freshly baked bread bun with a thin, hard crackling crust and a soft inside.
On Sunday mornings, it's mainly men queuing to buy the pistolets, while women prepare hot chocolate and brew fresh coffee at home. On their return, the family gather round to break open the still warm buns, remove the soft inside, smear the inside of the crust with a generous layer of farm butter and dip into the hot chocolate. Delicious!
