Controlling heat stress in poultry;
1. Providing ventilation – airflow at the bird’s level is the key to removing bird heat.
2. Feeding – birds are most hungry in the morning, feeding them will make them more prone to heat stress in the afternoon. Withdraw feeds six hours before peak warm temperatures in the afternoon.
3. Managing water – during heat stress birds will increase their water intake by 2 to 4 times their normal intake. Flush the water line to keep the water cool.
4. Use electrolytes – heat stress cause severe loss of minerals; sodium, potassium, phosphorus magnesium and zinc.
5. Providing sodium bicarbonate – it’s useful for hen in egg production. Panting and carbon dioxide release can change the acid base balance in poultry.
6. Supplementing vitamins – supplementing with vitamin A, D, E and B complex can be effective in tackling heat mortality stress in broilers. Vitamin C can effectively moderate warm temperature, decline in egg production and egg shell quality in laying hen.
