Chugoku Region Tourism Guide

Chugoku Region Tourism Guide Chugoku Region Tourism Promotion Association(中国地域観光推進協議会) The Chugoku Region has four World Heritage sites,
and boasts a unique traditional culture.

On visiting the region you’ll also discover the delights of its
beautiful nature and tasty food. The Chugoku Region, located at the western edge of Honshu (“Main Island”), is comprised of five prefectures where traditional culture still lives on, as can be seen at its four World Heritage sites – Itsukushima-jinja Shrine, Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, the A-Bomb Dome and the Hagi Reverberatory Furnace

. You can also visit well-preserved historical towns where you might encounter “original scenes of Japan”, almost like a step back in time. You can also enjoy marvelous views at San’inkaigan National Park, which has beautiful landscapes formed by the violent waves of the Sea of Japan; Setonaikai National Park with its innumerable islands dotting the calm Setonaikai Inland Sea, and Daisen-Oki National Park which is famous for Mt. Daisen, the region’s highest mountain. And wherever you go you will be welcomed with delicious local food from both mountain and sea, well-known all over Japan.

【Adachi Museum of Art, Shimane 🖼️】
was established in 1970, based on the collection of local businessman Adachi Zenko. It houses an outstanding collection of modern and contemporary Japanese paintings and ceramics, with works by Yokoyama Taikan being especially renowned for both their quality and quantity✨

Guided by the belief that “the Japanese garden is thought of as a living canvas”, the museum features a vast 165,000m² Japanese garden that beautifully reflects the founder’s passion. Set against the scenic landscapes of the San’in region, the garden transforms with each season, harmonizing perfectly with the surrounding mountains—truly like a living work of Japanese art💓

In spring, azaleas and satsuki flowers bring vibrant colors to the garden, while fresh greenery shines brilliantly.
Come and enjoy the beauty of this exquisite Japanese garden along with its remarkable art collection.

【The Miraculous Cliffside Temple – Nageiredo at Mitokusan】
Located in Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple, Tottori Prefecture, Nageiredo is one of Japan’s most mysterious and powerful spiritual spots.
Perched on a sheer cliffside, the temple seems as if it was “thrown” into place—hence the name Nageiredo (“Thrown-in Hall”).

How it was built remains a mystery to this day. It is designated as a National Treasure and is a prime example of Japanese mountain Buddhist architecture.

Visiting the temple requires climbing a steep mountain path, a true path of ascetic training. Make sure to wear proper hiking shoes and prepare carefully for the climb.
Because reaching it isn’t easy, the sense of awe and accomplishment is that much greater.

It will close on March 22, 2026, and they haven’t decided yet whether to restore it.
If they do rebuild it, it might not be completed until around 2049.⁉️😅
Let’s look forward to seeing it again in about 23 years👋
