Green Shop Patties

Green Shop Patties Promoting Patty - a part of Jamaica's history. Patties in those days were about the size of a cocktail patty, or a little bigger; not the size we we see today.

Green Shop or “The Patty Shop” opened its doors on Main Street May Pen in the early 1940’s as a grocery store, & in 1948 after the arrival of Michael’s cousin Allan, shop owners Amy & Michael began to make and sell patties alongside their usual groceries. Amy and Michael worked tirelessly to provide for their young family and to teach their children the importance of hard work. Their children - no

w parents and grandparents, can still recall nights spent cutting salt fish, wrapping sugar & salt, cleaning up the shop and making patties, before waking up for school the next day. At 4 am Michael would wake up to fire up the logwood-fed, brick oven while Amy would make & bake patties and butterfly biscuits. Size aside, patty was popular with everyone; ladies going to and from market, policemen, school children, Jamaicans young and old, and even foreigners like the US soldiers stationed at the Vernam Field Base in Clarendon. In their later years, Michael & Amy, like many Jamaicans during the 1960s and 70s, emigrated to Canada but their youngest son and, later, youngest daughter stayed to carry on the proud Patty tradition. In 1976, this daughter made Green Shop patties more modern by improving its size and flavour, and until today our patty has maintained its distinctive look. Its vegetarian friendly crust, lean ground beef, fresh spices & spices make for a taste & quality unlike any other. The history of the Jamaican Patty is a part of the Green Shop family history, and my family history is a part of Jamaican Patty history. We are a proudly Jamaican company, proud of the accomplishments of our forerunners, and very proud that our family is living proof of our national motto “Out of many, one people.”
