Not every Sunday you feel inspired to step out on a busy morning and carry your collected plastic waste to a designated collection point. But believe me, a brief conversation with Aunty Vaid is enough to motivate anyone.

Every fifteen days, she can be seen heading towards her goal with huge bags of collected plastic, often travelling by e-rickshaw. Her determination to make Delhi a better place to live—through proper waste management, tree plantation, and so many other initiatives—is truly inspiring.

Today, she stopped by my house and took me along to the collection point. For the past several months, I too have made it a point not to let a single piece of plastic end up in the regular bin, carefully storing it until it can be handed over for proper disposal.

People like Aunty Vaid remind us that meaningful change begins with simple, consistent actions.

I made this in 2013, when I had just started baking. It was my nephew’s birthday and I insisted on bringing a cake. It was a big gathering, so another cake was sourced from outside—just in case I messed up, or maybe they weren’t sure I could handle a bigger one. (Looking back, they were right—I couldn’t have made a bigger cake then.)

When both the cakes were on the table, I could see the difference—the icing, the decoration… everything. Mine wasn’t perfect in any way. I had simply tried to make it look pretty with whatever caught my eye at the time( chocolate coated strawberry for instance on a black forest cake)🫣

But it was made with so much enthusiasm and love, and it was really appreciated for its taste.

Some people have a gift that touches everyone around them — quietly, naturally, without even trying.

Our father, J. C. Gupta, was one of them.

We children would go to him to write our most important speeches. He wrote long, warm letters to each of us on milestone birthdays — the kind you keep forever. Even my most formidable boss — the kind whose heart seemed unreachable — was moved by a letter Papa wrote.

His pieces appeared in lottery gazettes when we were too young to understand their worth. We didn't keep them safe. That is a loss I carry quietly.

These three stories were written in the later years of his life — when he was unwell and could not go back to review or correct them. They are unpolished. They are imperfect. And they are completely, unmistakably him.

As my cousin Kiron so beautifully put it after reading his first story — "It feels like a skilled potter has picked up the wheel again — his hands may be shaking, but the clay still responds to his touch, and what emerges is unmistakably his."

Published lovingly by his family, this collection preserves his voice — for those who knew him, and for those who will now discover him.
