I just loved baking but my father was very strict and would not send me to any classes so just read books and picked up. Met my future husband at the age of 14 when my father took us to India for a holiday. Even though he was my father’s sister’s son he was totally against me coming to settle in India. Eventually he relented and we married .He as 21 and I was 19!! Amongst all the wedding gifts the
only thing I brought to India was a round oven and a hand mixer (much to my husband’s amusement). I could not cook initially so he did the most of it and I compensated by baking! Although he was not familiar with cakes he used to eat anything I baked and encouraged me to bake for friends. I baked a 3D cake for my son’s first birthday and there was no looking back. Word spread and I was taking birthday orders. Moved on to taking classes. We approached Kings Kourt Hotel to open a pastry shop in 1980 but I was persuaded to start a Beauty Salon so I went to Malaysia and did a course (much to my Dad’s distaste!!) and opened Classic Beauty Centre. It was only 8 yrs later that we opened TOOT-C the first pastry shop in Mysore. With absolutely no formal training, armed only with God’s blessing and husband’s support, my childhood passion and dream was realized. Soon this dream crumbled as we were throwing out more cakes than selling them .Luckily we also introduced pizza and burgers and this took off and supported the cake shop. For two years we struggled but slowly but surely, with people changing their mindset, we gained ground and have stood firm since. I have conducted 3 exhibitions which was very well received. I went on to do the Squires intensive course in cake decorating (U.K) and a 14 day Professional baking and decorating course in Singapore. TOOTC has reached its 25 th year. We will be opening a cake retail shop where anyone who loves to bake can purchase everything here .We are also launching our website and opening a professional cake baking and decorating school. It has been a challenging, fulfilling and rewarding journey and god willing, I will continue to do what I love – baking and decorating!!
