My childhood was very colourful…as gorgeous as a fairy tale. We belonged to a very middle-class family, but the atmosphere in our house never let the fiscal-related worries permeate its merry mood. Most walls were stacked with various kinds of books and tools pertaining to film projectors and cameras (tools of the trade of my father). During the Christmas season, carols sung by Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, Jim Reeves, Harry Belafonte, were played on a spool-tape recorder.
Every year we used to decorate a corner of our room with Christmas trees made by my elder brother, along with balloons, lanterns, streamers, and lots of greeting cards that we used to receive. My father used to bring fruit cakes from Nahoum's, a legendary bakery based out of Calcutta. Christmas season meant tram rides with our grandfather to Alipore Zoo, Victoria Memorial, Indian Museum amongst other places, and he used to treat us with bananas and oranges that he carried from home. Our mother, as a routine during the season, took us to New Market, Park Street every year, where we used to enjoy the specially decorated shops, including cake shops like Kathleen and Flurys.
The winter to me is...warming up my palms around a hot coffee mug and the aroma of cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, ginger, and of course fresh oranges!
I do my best to try and recreate these memories through my cakes and cookies this season so that I can share a window of my childhood magic with you all. What are some of your most precious childhood memories from winter? I would love to read about them :))
Please do keep in mind that you need to put in your order at least 3 days in advance, as I make these fresh. For ornamental gingerbread cookies, I would need a week's notice.
