Mother. The word alone is enough to stir up a whole gamut of emotions, isn’t it? In my opinion, the mother - child relationship has to be one of the most complicated relationships in either’s life, but that doesn’t necessarily have to mean a bad thing. Aren’t complicated dishes delicious too?
The desserts I associate most with my mother are her kheer and custard. I had a sweet tooth growing up (surprise, surprise) and I remember eating steaming hot bowls of custard she’d make with Weikfield custard powder, the creamy skin that forms on the custard once it’s cool still remains a favourite. The kheer she makes is more rabdi than kheer, and that’s what makes it such a pleasure to eat. Rich, thick, with hours’ worth of accumulated rabdi, it’s really quite difficult to stop after a bowl.
