Beneath the crust of this landmark bakery lies many a tale. Back then stood the posh Hotel D’Angelis, where the present day Bata building now stands. Horse drawn carriages drew into the canopied porch of the hotel, as English memsahibs alighted daintily. Soon after, an Italian gentleman, Mr. A.Bosotto and his brother jointly took over the reins of the hotel and rechristened it “HOTEL BOSOTTO BROS”
. At the turn of events after the II World War, Mr. Bosotto decided to return to his motherland and sold the goodwill of Bosotto Bros to Mr. B.Muslappa Chowdhry in 1950, for a princely sum of Rs. 15000. Mr. Chowdhry had hitherto been in the dairy business in the name and style “THE CHAMPION DAIRY had a long association with Mr. Bosotto, as one of the vendors supplying dairy products to the hotel. The goodwill amount was paid in two instalments: Rs. 10,000 was paid on 7th. April, 1950 and Rs. 5,000 exchanged hands on 12th. April 1950. Mr Chowdhry then bought a building near Anand Theatre on Mount Road and Bosotto Bros was reborn. Bosotto Bros began operations as a bakery in 1950, carving a niche for itself in the city, with the aroma of freshly baked bread drawing clientele from far and near. Bosotto Bros supplied bread to the elite clubs and hotels of the city and found loyal customers amidst renowned industrialists, politicians and even the film fraternity. At first a small restaurant was opened on the first floor and the poet Kannadasan spent several hours here, penning his works. There is even a reference to the restaurant in the poet’s biography. The bakery’s fame spread far and wide, and in fact the cake for Prince Andrew's first birthday in 1961, was baked by Bosotto Bros. A black and white picture of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II cutting the cake, Prince Philip and former Chief Minister Kamaraj, still hangs on the wall of the Mount Road branch. Today in the hands of the third generation, the bakery is run by Mr. K. Raj Kumar.
