Be honest.

Not the hourly rate you’ve convinced yourself you’re earning.

The real one.

And before you start calculating, you’re not allowed to leave anything out.

Count the time spent answering enquiries.

Creating quotes.

Designing cakes.

Ordering supplies.

Shopping.

Baking.

Decorating.

Cleaning down.

Packaging.

Delivering.

Posting on social media.

Chasing payments.

Now add up the costs.

Not just flour, sugar, eggs and butter.

Your electricity.

Your internet.

Your phone bill.

Your Canva subscription.

Your website.

Your insurance.

Your packaging.

The equipment that wears out and needs replacing.

The tools you’ve bought over the years to do your job properly.

Because if you worked for someone else, all of those costs would be covered by the business.

When you’re self employed, the business is you.

So after you’ve deducted every expense and accounted for every hour worked, what’s left?

Are you paying yourself a fair wage?

Or are you earning less than a teenager stacking shelves at the local supermarket?

This isn’t about charging more for the sake of it.

It’s about building a business that can actually support you.

Because being busy isn’t the same as being profitable.

And working harder isn’t always the answer.

Not all animal themed cakes need zebras, giraffes and jungle leaves.

Sometimes a few hidden footprints, a pretty colour palette and a touch of gold are all it takes.

Can you spot all the different tracks?

I always thought this cake was a once off and that I’d never recreate it exactly the same way again. Then a customer saw it and asked me to make it for her special day. Knowing it had resonated with someone enough for them to want their own version of it, I felt I had to oblige.

One of the things I’m most excited about right now is what’s coming up inside Sugarcoated Cake School over the next few months.

As members, they’ll be learning everything from wafer paper wedding cake techniques and animal themed celebration cakes to the principles of cake design, helping them create cakes that look more polished, balanced and professional.

Alongside that, we’ll be diving into gluten free baking, vegan baking and creating delicious fillings including curds, caramels and compotes.

And because building baking skills is only part of the journey, we’ll also be covering topics such as pricing for profit, attracting repeat customers and developing your own signature style.

But what I’m most proud of is the community we’re building.

Through our member WhatsApp group, bakers can ask questions, share their work, celebrate wins and get support from both me and fellow members who understand exactly what it’s like to be on this journey.

We’re also working behind the scenes to make the membership even better, with improvements to the layout and structure to help members get the most from the growing library of tutorials, resources and training.

Membership isn’t currently open, but if you’d like to be the first to know when doors open again, join the waiting list and I’ll make sure you’re the first to hear about it.

What would you most love to learn inside a cake school?

She’s a classic. Effortlessly stylish. Enough said.

That’s this cake, and that’s this lady.

Soft green tones and touches of gold kept everything elegant, timeless, and understated, just like Siobhan herself.

“What movie did you watch, girls?” 🍿🎬

This cake was such a fun one to create and honestly what is better than popcorn and cake all in one setup? Sweet and salty is always a winning combination.

Unfortunately I was not able to fit them in for one of my baking birthday parties, so they decided to have a movie themed party at home instead and I was so happy I could still be part of it by making the cake for them.

Such a fun design for an evening celebration and definitely one that makes you want to grab a blanket, pick a movie and settle in for the night.

So tell me… what movie would you choose?

Cake is a luxury product. I’ve been treating it like it isn’t, and it’s been showing.

The world’s been heavy lately and I felt it the same as everyone else. Without really meaning to, I started pulling back. Keeping things smaller, keeping costs down, trying not to ask too much of anyone.

I was boring myself in the process.

Here’s the thing though. Luxury means something different to everyone. For some of you it’s the full production, the sculpted, detailed, show stopping cake that has people reaching for their phones the second it walks into the room. For others it’s simply having something made, something real, something that marks the day properly without coming off a supermarket shelf.

Both of those things are valid. I have options for both.

But I’m done designing everything to the lowest common denominator. The good days still happen. They still deserve to be marked. And if you’re going to do it, you may as well do it properly, whatever properly looks like for you.

I’m here for all of it. I just needed to remember that.

Palette knife painting…..where I willingly abandon every ounce of control I’ve spent years developing as a cake maker 😂

“It doesn’t have to be perfect,” they say…

Meanwhile I’m internally spiralling because

• every swipe is different
• every flower has a mind of its own
• there is no “undo” button

The funny thing is, this style looks so effortless, but for someone whose brain loves sharp edges, structure and precision… this is basically exposure therapy in cake form.

Will I do it again? Absolutely.
Will I be stressed the entire time? Also absolutely.
