Human beings suffer more in their minds than they do in reality. Although nothing in our physical surroundings poses a threat, we often feel as though our world is crashing down around us. In the absence of an earthquake, we become victims of our own fabricated tremor.
The world itself remains undisturbed; the same cannot be said of the human mind. The enemy lies within the stories we tell ourselves. The mind is a bestselling storyteller, persuading us to believe and act upon the anger, happiness, guilt and sadness that exist in the invisible pages of our invisible world. The earth is a massive space, but we spend all of life inside a globe that does not extend beyond the territory of our mind.
We hold on to unexamined narratives, verified not by evidence but by fleeting emotions. Soon enough, make-believe turns into belief, driving our day-to-day decisions. We begin to hear loud noises only to look around and discover nothing in the physical space. We say the world outside is a dangerous place when a greater harm dwells within us.
This is not to say that suffering does not exist in the external world. Illness, loss, injustice, and disaster are real. Yet even when hardship originates outside of us, the mind often magnifies it through fear, anticipation, and the stories it constructs. The world may wound us once, but the mind can replay the injury a thousand times.
