Badan Pengelolaan Lingkungan Hidup Daerah Jakarta pada 2011 pernah merilis jumlah sampah di DKI Jakarta. Dalam sehari produksi sampah mencapai 7.500 ton. Mirisnya, lebih dari 54 persen atau 4.050 ton adalah sampah makanan. Sampah makanan itu tidak hanya dari sisa makanan yang sudah dikonsumsi, tetapi juga sisa sampah makanan saat produksi.

The report said more efforts should be made all along the food chain and special precautions should be taken when setting farm policy to make sure that less produce is discarded. An EU study, however, shows about half that waste can still be tied to households, not policy.
