Tambun biscuits 淡汶餅, made from flour, sugar, mung beans, fried shallots, lard (we used Crisco) and salt. It’s one of a must buy souvenirs from Penang.
We have made the original and ones with sambal udang(last picture)!

Ang koo ... Red tortoise cake 紅龜粿is a small round or oval-shaped pastry with soft, sticky glutinous rice flour skin wrapped around a sweet filling made from mung beans in the centre.It is moulded to resemble a tortoise shell and is presented resting on a piece of banana leaf. As suggested by its name, red tortoise cakes are traditionally red in colour (but I didn’t use any colourings, the orange comes from sweet potatoes) and has a sticky, chewy texture when eaten. Considered to be auspicious items, these sweet pastries are especially prepared during important festivals such as Chinese New Year as offerings to the Chinese deities.
Of course, I didn’t wait till CNY, I ate them very often in Penang 🥰
