WORKPLACE WISDOM
Reflections To Inspire Excellence
By Rev Isaac Apenteng
WISDOM LESSON 16
Tyranny of the Urgent (The Eisenhower Wisdom)
**” See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil."**
*Ephesians 5:15-16* (KJV)
There is a distinct difference between what is *urgent* and what is *important*. Urgent tasks demand immediate attention—ringing phones, flashing DMs, and drop-in requests—but they frequently serve someone else's agenda. Important tasks contribute directly to long-term mission-critical goals, character growth, and structural health. Wisdom recognises that if we are not circumspect, our entire career can be consumed by the urgent, leaving the truly important completely untouched. To redeem our time, we must learn to categorise our tasks with radical, unemotional clarity.
Reflection Questions
1. **The Category Check:**
Look at your task list from yesterday. How many items were genuinely *important* to your growth and the company's success, versus simply *urgent* to someone else?
2. **The Distraction Cost:**
How often do I allow a minor notification to pull me away from deep, high-level ex*****on?
3. **The Long-Term Debt:**
What major organisational breakthrough am I currently putting off because my calendar is choked with daily trivialities?
Call to Action
**Today’s Challenge:** Draw a simple 2x2 grid (Urgent vs. Important). Map your daily tasks onto it. Identify at least two items in the "Urgent but Not Important" quadrant and consciously delegate them, automate them, or push them to the end of the day.
A Prayer for the Workday
*Lord, open my eyes to see through the illusion of busyness. Forgive me for confusing motion with progress. Give me the discernment to distinguish between a loud demand and a significant task. Grant me the courage to say no to trivial distractions so I can say yes to impactful excellence. Amen.*
