Excellent conditions yesterday for drilling our oilseed r**e. We changed the drill over onto r**e drilling (hopper divider in and coulters set in line). Fertiliser was applied at 85kg/ha down the front coulter and 3kg/ha of seed down the rear coulter. This year the toolbar legs are set at 100mm deep, normally we would go at 150mm. The fields are in such good condition it was decided there was no need to go any lower. Only time will tell if that was the right decision.

Mrs B has been cultivating cow muck into a wheat stubble today use a toolbar at a steady 8.5 km/hr. The toolbar has the 550mm wings on the 4 NG legs. The legs are set at 50mm deep and the power harrows job is to just level off the soil and not work it down so the tines are above ground. The next pass in this field will be to sow a 1 year silage ley with a combi drill.

Our Zone direct drill sowing into a grass pasture. The leading disc is cutting the grass sword reducing the disturbance but will this be the best approach? Will the tine only side have a better seed establishment because the original grass growth will be reduced and the new seed will less competition?

Direct drilling today with our 6m Zone tine drill which is setup in 2 configurations to show them both working. On the left of the video is 12 J J Metcalfe and Son Ltd 12mm wide tine coulters in 3 rows then depth wheels and following harrow which is slightly raised on the ground. On the right in the video is 12 cutting discs then 12 sowing tines in 2 rows, then the following harrow slightly raised and finally 12 press wheels which are also depth control. The tractor was travelling at 10 kph.
