We’d like to take a moment to respond to some of the negative comments we have seen on social media regarding both ourselves, Peter Herd’s of Wilmslow, and our neighbours at Barbakan Bakery.
In April this year, Barbakan Bakery opened on Moore Lane, just off Chapel Lane, where one of our shops in the family business has proudly traded for many decades.
Our family has been in the baking industry since 1932. We are now a fourth-generation bakery, approaching 100 years in business, and we feel incredibly grateful for the support and loyalty of our customers over the years. Through changing times, we have worked hard to remain part of the high street and the local community.
Barbakan is also a well-established and respected bakery and deli, with a long-standing reputation in Chorlton.
Since their opening, there have been numerous comments, both online and in person, about two bakeries operating on the same road. Naturally, when another bakery opened nearby, it came as a surprise to us. However, we would like to make it clear that there is no animosity from our side. Before they opened, I personally went to introduce myself, welcome the owner and her team to the road, and wish them every success.
While we are both bakeries, we each offer our own products, styles, and experiences. We are grateful that our customers continue to support us, just as they support them. Our business works hard every day to earn that loyalty, and we never take it for granted.
The reality for all independent businesses is that community support matters. Local shops, cafés, bakeries, and retailers all rely on people choosing to shop locally. Every purchase, no matter how small, helps keep independent businesses alive and thriving. As the saying goes, “use us or lose us” – supporting local businesses is what keeps our high streets vibrant and unique.
As for us, we will continue to focus on what we have always done: producing fresh food daily, using quality ingredients, and serving our customers with the care, commitment, and friendly service they deserve. We will continue striving to do what we do best and to be a business that our community can be proud of.
