We often hear parents say they don’t use the straps on their high chair so they can get to their child more easily if they choke.

But falls, even from a fairly low height, can cause a serious head injury with lifelong consequences. And sadly, they are common.

Little ones might try to get things that are out of their reach, lean over the side and topple out or push themselves up and try to climb out.

And, as they are top-heavy, they can topple easily and suffer a serious head injury or broken bones.

Meanwhile, if your child was to choke it only takes a few seconds to unbuckle them and start first aid.

So, get into the habit of using the straps on the highchair every time you use it. And, remember to always stay with your baby and watch when they’re eating so you can act quickly if they choke.

If you’re worried you can:
- Secure the harness over their bib so you can release it easier in an emergency
- Practice releasing the harness a few times so you’re comfortable with doing it
- Download our free fact sheet for tips on how to prevent choking: https://capt.org.uk/resources/choking-fact-sheet/

We had another gorgeous visit to Three Bridges Nursing Home last week. The children were excited to give flowers to their new friends. We had a story and the children coloured pictures to give to everyone and then finished it off with songs and dancing. It was so lovely to see the residents enjoying having the children there and having fun joining in with the songs. We do love seeing our new friends and will be back very soon to see everyone again :)

Stimming is a natural way many people regulate emotions, manage stress, cope with sensory overload, or feel calm and safe. It can look different for every person - rocking, pacing, hand movements, repeating sounds or words, humming, or focusing on certain textures, sounds, or lights.

Stimming is not something that automatically needs to be stopped or corrected. When it is safe, understanding and acceptance can help a person feel more regulated, supported, and emotionally balanced.

Supporting neurodivergent people means looking at what the behaviour is communicating and what need it is meeting. Compassion and understanding matter more than forcing someone to appear “normal”. 💛

What are some stimming behaviours people often misunderstand?

Our weekly childminder group had a visit yesterday from the Oral Health Team from Bridgewater Community Healthcare. The session was fantastic and really engaged the children. The children learnt why it is important to clean your teeth, how to clean your teeth (they were able to practice on soft toys and models) and what foods are good for your teeth. The team then read a story and created arts and crafts. One of the little mindees did a lovely colouring that they have taken away to put on their display board. Thank you so much ladies you were wonderful :)
