The Maritozzi buns didn't hang around long on Sunday sweet brioche buns filled with vanilla scented whipped cream.

The origin of the name derives from a slang corruption of the word 'marito'.

They were well known to celebrated Romanesque poet Gioacchino Belli (1791-1863) who commented that 'during lent you see everybody eating maritozzi in the Caffetteria as they never had eaten before''
