For centuries, long before anyone had dreamt up a meal deal, people needed real food they could carry with them. In medieval Spain, workers and pilgrims wrapped meat and vegetables in bread dough to sustain them on the long roads through Galicia. In tenth-century Persia, merchants travelling the ancient trade routes filled small pastries - Sanbosag, they called them, filled with spiced meat and nuts, food that would nourish them for days of walking. The famous traveller Ibn Battuta wrote about eating them at the Sultan’s court in Delhi circa the 1330s.

Two foods, born thousands of miles apart, from the same simple idea: honest, portable, hand-held meals made with care and real ingredients. That is what we love about them. They were never designed to sit under a heat lamp or come out of a factory. They were made by hand, with good ingredients and nothing more.

Our empanadas are made from scratch, right here, with fillings we are proud of. And our samosas come from , one of our Cookery School tutors, who makes them properly, the way she was taught. Nandita is also now selling her wonderful frozen curries from our Dummer Down location - if you haven’t tried them yet, they are well worth it.

Better still, you can learn to cook like this yourself. Nandita teaches her brilliant Punjabi Feast class at our Cookery School, where she takes you on a tour of the Punjab and guides you through traditional techniques and authentic ingredients before you sit down to enjoy the fruits of your labour with a well-earned glass of wine. She is one of a wonderful roster of tutors who teach everything from South Indian delicacies to Amalfi Coast cooking, Eastern Mediterranean feasts to beautiful breads. Have a look at our website to find something that excites you.

This is the kind of food we believe in. Food with a story, food with provenance, food made by people who genuinely care about what goes into it.

Hot cross buns hold a particular place in my heart.

Before we made them in our bakery at Honesty I would make them for my children — they produce a smell that makes everyone feel happy and comforted. Sugar and spice and all things nice.

Ours have ten ingredients. Things you would find in most kitchens. The supermarket version has more than twenty — including a performative amount of butter (I imagine it is there so they can say they are made with butter), invert sugar syrup, added gluten, emulsifiers with names longer than this caption, and something listed simply as “flavouring.”

But here is what really matters. That long list still does not tell you everything. By law, supermarket buns do not have to declare the processing aids used in their manufacture. That is probably another three to five ingredients you will never know about.

Our hot cross buns only stay fresh for a couple of days. We think that is something to be proud of.
There is no such thing as cheap food. Something or someone always pays the hidden price — the environment, the farmers, workers, or you the taxpayer.

Our bacon baps are going nitrite free.

The WHO wants carcinogen warnings on cured meats. The British Meat Processors Association found nitrites offer no extra protection against harmful bacteria. And yet most manufacturers carry on using them - because it saves money and extends shelf life.

We think you deserve to know what is in your food. So we’ve made a change.

Real bacon. No nitrites. Just better.

One of the first things we wanted to fix was the sandwiches. They should be the easiest thing to get right and somewhere along the way, we lost our way with the fillings. So we started again.

New recipes, better ingredients, every sandwich freshly filled each morning across our sites.

We've made the fillings more exciting - honey roasted ham and Gruyère, devilled egg mayo, beetroot and harissa mayo, mozzarella with basil pesto and vine tomato, and many more.

The selection rotates weekly so there's always something different, but the standard stays the same.

Come in and tell us what you think.

Let’s start afresh.

We’ve spent the last few months listening, tasting, and rethinking everything we serve at lunchtime. Your feedback has shaped a lot of what’s coming. On Monday, every Honesty site launches a completely new food range. We can’t wait to show you.

A quality handbag is usually an expensive handbag. The leather used is fine and the way it has been stitched together means it should last. It takes time to put a quality handbag together and that time is reflected in its price.

Food is different.

Some of the finest dishes are superb because they are cooked slowly, using the cheapest of ingredients. A stew simmered slowly will cost less than a sirloin steak fried quickly. Quality when it pertains to food is about something else.

At Honesty, providing quality is one of our most important motivations. Quality for us is about producing great tasting dishes without resorting to the use of artificial flavourings or excess use of salt and sugar. It is about the environment our food is served in and it is about the warm and helpful reception you get from our staff when you are being served.

That all sounds simple but to achieve all of this takes attention, commitment and belief in a transparent food system that puts public health first.

Your custom is greatly appreciated and we will continue to enhance our offering to provide the best possible experience.
