ISLE OF WIGHT Protest against:
Parking Meters in Shanklin, Ryde & Sandown

We are still navigating a challenging economic climate. Now is the time to support the high street, not introduce measures that actively discourage people from visiting it.

As a small business we witness the daily rhythm of our high street firsthand. A newsagents is more than just a retail space; it is a community hub. Many of our regular customers are elderly residents or locals who pop in for five minutes to grab a paper, a pint of milk, or to exchange a few words of conversation.

These "quick stops" are the lifeblood of our business.

If parking meters are introduced, we fear the following consequences:

β€’ Loss of Passing Trade: The friction of having to pay for a short stay will discourage the spontaneous "pop-in" visits that small shops rely on. Customers will inevitably choose out-of-town supermarkets with free parking, draining the high street of its revenue.

β€’ Impact on the Elderly and Vulnerable: Many of our residents rely on close, accessible parking. Forcing a digital or paid interaction for a brief visit creates a barrier for those who may struggle with mobile payment apps or who are on fixed incomes.

β€’ Erosion of Community: Regent Street is the "heartbeat" of Shanklin. By making it more difficult and expensive to visit, we risk turning a vibrant social space into a ghost town. Once the local shops close, they rarely return, and the sense of community identity is lost forever.
