I’ve had quite a few messages asking about the Thor’s hammer style cake so I thought it’s easier to answer them here.
I was inspired by a cake I saw a while ago on a site called ‘Way Beyond Cakes’ - she does brilliant structural cakes - and if you’ve followed me for a while it’s the same place I was inspired by my daughters swinging handbag cake a good few years ago now.
So, when my son finally got into Marvel I had this cake in mind. As always, typical caker, never much time for my own children’s cakes. but I checked the site and there was a tutorial, which I purchased. Unfortunately I couldn’t lay my hands on the equipment list needed quickly (like, right now!!) as craft stores aren’t quite as easy to come by here so I resorted back to my original plan and used my usual hardware kit.
The handle is a solid wooden piece wrapped in electrical tape and above that I attached a solid platform for the cake to sit on. There was a bit of carving for the shape and then my usual rods and bolts structure to secure it. I did toy with the idea of keeping the cake free but I knew it wouldn’t have time to dry fully and it was hotting up over here about that time and I didn’t want to take the risk.
Yes, as you can imagine there’s not a huge amount of cake but I wasn’t worried about that, this was about impact!
And yes, in answer to the most popular question I was asked, you can swing it!!
