I'm not really one for New Year's resolutions as I think we shouldn't be waiting for the New Year to make positive changes. But if you're inclined please could the one resolution you make be to support eating local and seasonal food within the UK.

January, the time when everyone wants to go on a detox diet or “Veganuary”….well instead of heading for those avocados from Mexico, asparagus from Peru, why not look at some delicious seasonal veg inspired recipes.
Embrace the seasonal leekes, celeriac and potatoes and get creative in the kitchen.

Where we live in Wiltshire we are very lucky to have some incredible veg box schemes available to us and very low cost. If Christmas teachers us anything it's about how to go back to the basics cooking larger joints of meat and using up leftovers over several meals.

Food waste accounts for something close to 70% in the industry. "One must eat to live and not live to eat"
Food security for us is so different than may around the world and I think we take it for granted.

We also need that younger generation to understand where food comes from how it's produced and the consequences of the choices they make with what they eat. Farming and food production need to be pushed more within schools and curriculum so the younger generation fully grasp the concept of where the food on their plate comes from.

So support local food, make seasonal food choices, and 🇬🇧

The dairy x weaned Angus steers. 🐮
These guys are around 4 months old, we’ve transitioned them off calf cake and onto a mix of homegrown red clover silage, whole crop, grass silage and a little bit of rolled barley. They will then be out grazing the Red clover/rye grass and herbal leys in the spring.

We use this for our finishing animals as easier to use home grown feed we’ve grown on our own farm than cake out of a silo for them. Plus by having a diverse rotation of crops on our farm we’re getting the best out of our soil. 🌱

We find by giving a forage based diet over the winter housing period we don’t get to much of a growth check or plateau when they go out to graze in the spring.

We house then as the land surrounding them is too heavy clay/wet to sustain cattle over the wet winter months and can do more damage to your soil and create compaction. 🌱

It’s today and I thought we’d go have a little dig in honour of that. Comparisons for the DD winter barley vs the Conventional winter barley. See if you can guess which is which? 🌱We have been trying on the farm to reduce our fertiliser usage on all grassland and have managed to remove completely from some blocks though careful animal management and grazing practise. We know we can’t quite do the same with the arable, but if we can get our soils in the best possible health, hopefully our inputs can be lowered through cover cropping building fertility and fungicide usage drops when soil biology is at its peak. One can hope, it’s a journey not a race and always lessons to be learnt each season.

December is here and the girls are coming in. Calving starts in 9 weeks and I can’t wait. It would have been nicer to keep them out longer but in this block were limited with grassland so we have to bring them in as calving sheds are here. Their summer grazing is up above Edington so just a tad far away for checking daily and the ground gets difficult on the hill in winter. We have a lot of fleckvieh x Angus and she’s one prime example. Nice stocky hardy cow with good milk, just what we want!

Something different today, a visit to to get a closer look at the work they are doing on Multi Paddock Adaptive Grazing on farm. was our knowledgeable guide on all things grazing, regen ag and herd breeding plans for the future with some impressive fertility and calving period statistics. Great to see such impressive biodiversity gains in 18 months on the farm. Waiting to see what can be achieved in the next 18!
