I’M REALLY NOT CRAZY ABOUT …
Naked wedding cakes. Let me explain.
You’ve spent months, perhaps years scrolling through Pinterest, Google and planning your dream wedding. Every detail has been meticulously planned and designed to reflect your style, show your personality and tell your love story.
So why choose a naked cake that looks like every other naked cake?
1. Perhaps you don’t like fondant –too sweet, too thick. However, quality cake designers will use quality ingredients. The best fondant tastes of vanilla and can be rolled very thinly – 2-3mm. The average cake portion is 1” square finger portion so the amount of fondant is minimal (and it can be cut off, anyway).
2. Naked cakes dry out much more quickly than covered cakes. It’s possible for your cake to be out for 4-6 hours on the day before you cut it. A cake covered in ganache, buttercream or fondant will still be delicious and moist after that time.
3. If you’re working to a tight budget but would love a beautifully decorated cake, one option is to have a small decorated cake and undecorated sheet cakes which are kept in the kitchen and cut up to be served to your guests.
There are so many different options. For instance, cakes can be covered in buttercream or ganache and decorated with buttercream or ganache flowers, intricately piping eg Lambeth style. Fondant covered cakes can also be textured, painted, piped, covered in ruffles. Not forgetting intricately handcrafted sugar flowers to adorn your cake.
Of course, it's your wedding and it should absolutely reflect what's meaningful to you. That said, from my experience as a cake designer, the cake really plays a key role in tying together the overall look and feel of your big day, alongside the venue, your dress, and the flowers.
I’d love to know what you think.
