Saker Wholefoods

Saker Wholefoods Trail blazing 1980’s Bakery Co-op, currently down to one baker! Vegan confection especially has become our strong point.

Established in 1989, Saker Vegetarian Foods began it's life some years before as Gillygate Co-Operative in York. After moving to Todmorden in Lancashire/West Yorkshire Karl Badger, originally with Alex and Stuart, created what would become a well established supplier to the length of Britain. We have dabbled in organic vegan cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, crumbles, flapjacks and shortbreads. We i

ntroduce new products for limited periods of time to assess their popularity. Some of our products are seasonal such as our Hot Cross Buns (which are Not Cross Buns the rest of the year), Christmas Cakes, Stollen, Cranberry and Chestnut Rolls, mince pies and sweet mince rolls. Our dedication to providing vegans with a wide selection of both sweet and savoury foods has earned us a firm standing in the North of England; we have been reviewed in the guide to eating vegetarian 2011 beside other fantastic food establishments in Calderdale. Having a choice of what to eat without harming animals is close to our hearts, as is making healthy choices. Bread Types- White, Wholewheat, Wheat-free, 12 year Sour-Dough, Vegan
Sweet Types- Vegan, Sugar-free, Wheat-Free
Savoury Types- Vegetarian, Vegan, Puff Pastry, Wholewheat Pastry
Morning Products- Scones, Not Cross Buns

Karl Badger is the baker of our breads, making all bread from scratch, fresh, every morning, seven days a week. Alongside another very experienced baker who has worked for Saker for over a decade, the sweet and savoury products are made in the bakery on Halifax Road, Todmorden and delivered with the bread straight from the oven to our outlet there and in Hebden Bridge. In 2009 after returning from New Zealand, Clare Stagg- daughter of Karl, opened the Saker Organic Bread Shop. Within months 'The Shop' had gained the reputation as the go-to place for fresh, organic bread daily. The Shop now has a large client base with customers travelling miles to come in. Many of the regular customers have become good friends of the company. We also supply and support local business' ranging from cafes to hotels. Clare has over four years experience in customer service, qualifications in food and business management and has worked in the bakery since the age of five, where she would make up flan boxes stood on bread baskets! Clare has an in-depth understanding of various nutritional requirements, needs, intolerances and allergies and can provide advice on how our products can benefit you. Feel free to pop into Saker Organic Bread for a sample, a chat and a chance to smell the famous scent of Saker bread still hot in the stacks!

BACK ON TRACK!

Around 50 faces, many of them familiar, joined us for another of our soiree tonight, proving that the Folklore Centre is alive and well again! We had a real treat in Sooxanne Rolfe's illustrated talk about 'monster' customs of Central and Eastern Europe - a feast of liminal beings arousing through their communities in a very much more robust mumming tradition than we have here! See Sooxanne's images and more in the excellent 'Wilde Volk' exhibition at In A Land gallery in Hebden Bridge, and join us we run with Whitby Krampus through HB on the 30th!
