SATURDAY SUMMARY
What's been happening at Louise Cannon Cakes this week?

It has been a mixed of fun stuff (baking) and boring (admin). Let's get the boring bit out of the way first...

I decided to start looking at Making Tax Digital, even though I don't need to do it just yet. You've probably noticed TV ads for this change to income tax submissions being phased in based on turnover. The HMRC runs handy webinars to help sole traders like me so I grabbed a coffee and notepad and settled in for the training. It actually doesn't look too bad and I think I now understand what I'll need to do.

And then the fun stuff...

I had two birthday cake orders going out yesterday. One's a choc sponge for a small 80th birthday celebration. The other is for a repeat customer's 6th birthday and was decorated to match the party invitations. But the party is this morning so you don't get to see the whole cake yet.

I also hit an exciting milestone on Instagram... I hit 1,500 followers on Thursday, and I'm currently at 1,504! I know it's not huge in the grand scheme of things, but it's huge for me - especially when Instagram recently culled a lot of dormant and fake accounts so lots of people lost a lot of followers literally overnight. So thank you to everyone who follows me for being real, and for sticking around... and remember that now's an excellent time to book a cake with me (just sayin' 😂).

And now it's Saturday, and it's the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend so I'm going to have another coffee then pop to Sainsbury's for snacks.

On your big day I’ll drive very carefully to deliver the cake to your venue and set it up ready for you.

If you’re having a single tier cake setup will be relatively quick.

Where possible I’ll decorate it at home so I just need to put it on your cake table and get the delivery note signed off.

If you have multiple tiers, or if the decorations are too delicate to survive the journey in situ, I’ll pack everything up in separate boxes and do the setup at the venue. It will be stacked, ribbons or piping added to cover the bottom edge of each tier, decorations added before I hand it over to the venue.

Then I head home cornering like an F1 driver because I no longer have precious cargo in the boot and you get to enjoy your beautiful and delicious cake.

Hi! I'm Louise. I make truly unique non-boring wedding cakes for couples with very specific visions of a delicious cake and zero interest in settling.

I'm based in Swindon and I've been doing this since 2016.

Outside of cake I enjoy cooking (yes I actually do love being in the kitchen). My current favourite “recipe” is Chicken Thing - so named because it’s random (like me). The only repeat ingredients are chicken, garlic and cheese of some sort. After that it depends what else is in the fridge, then it’s usually served with pasta shapes.

I’m also a crazy cat lady.

I got into making cakes because I decided to learn sugar craft when we had to stop scuba diving, and then went full time because I realised it was more fun than office work.

The kind of couples I love making cakes for: people who have a very clear vision and need someone who can actually pull it off, but who also want their guests to do a happy dance when they taste it.

If that sounds like you, hello. I'm glad you're here.

If you're new here give me a 👋👋 in the comments.

IT'S JUNE!
What’s going on at Louise Cannon Cakes this month?

Well I’m pleased to report that there will be much baking - for birthday and wedding cakes, and for wedding showcase events at Trunkwell House and Kings Head Hotel.

I do want to update some of my display cakes before the showcases… and the first is next week s I’d better get a move on!

There’s still flavour development on the list - my next challenge is to create candied/crystalised mango. It works for pineapple so I’m going to start with that recipe and see what happens. If I remember I’ll take pictures for you.

The equipment sorting is ongoing - next on the list is to go through my flower cutters, work out what I actually need multiples of, then sell the spares. And yes I genuinely do need multiples as some do deteriorate with age - plastic cutters can become blunt which gives you fuzzy petal edges usually exactly when you don’t want them.

And there’s some sugar flowers to make for wedding cakes which I’m really looking forward to.

Oh, and I’m booked onto a webinar tomorrow on Making Tax Digital (boo!). I don’t need to do it yet, but I want to get my head round it. And who knows, I my just start early to get it over and done with.

But now it’s time to qu**ky do the washing up and decide what’s for tea. Probably something with chicken since we had Bolognese yesterday.

SATURDAY SUMMARY
What's been happening at Louise Cannon Cakes this week?

Life has slowly returned to near normality after our holiday. The 75 loads of washing are done thanks to the excellent drying weather we came home to. The cats are finally getting over their separation anxiety. And I’m (reluctantly) getting used to having to cook for myself again instead of just choosing something from the menu.

I'm relieved to say I had no orders this week. My cakes can cope with the heat but it does make everything hard work.

So in the absence of baking I have been catching up on order admin and quotes from the past couple of weeks, having a bit of a sort, and booking in some new orders (yay!).

I’ve booked two new wedding fairs which I'm excited about - 27 August at SS Great Britain in Bristol, and 4 October at Warbrook House on the Berkshire/Hampshire border.

I popped up to Cirencester to lend a display wedding cake to the Kings Head for their in-house photoshoot. Which one? Sorry, you’ll have to wait until they update their website to find out. But I’ll give you a clue… it has sugar flowers on it 🤭

Oh! Speaking of the Kings Head, we got the gallery from our own photoshoot there in March. Which is great timing as I haven't taken any photos this week so you can see a few of those instead. Suppliers are below

And now it’s Saturday again, so I'm off to get another coffee before making the fruit cake tier for one of my new orders. The fruit has been soaking in brandy for two days, and Pamela will approve as it's peel-free.
