Aloe vera has been used for centuries and has a long history in traditional skincare and herbal practices. The clear gel inside its fleshy leaves is widely used in skincare products, particularly for its soothing and moisturising properties.

As a succulent, it’s relatively easy to care for. Aloe vera prefers a bright spot with plenty of indirect sunlight and well-drained compost. Allow the compost to dry out between waterings, taking extra care not to overwater during the colder months.

A very useful plant to have around, and a lovely addition to a sunny windowsill. 🌱

As the seasons change, it’s worth giving your herbs a little extra attention.

Many perennial herbs will begin to slow their growth as temperatures drop, so be mindful of watering and make sure pots have good drainage, especially during wetter weather. Tender herbs may need to be moved under cover to protect them from cold nights and frost.

A few small adjustments now can help keep your herbs healthy through the colder months and ready for fresh growth when spring arrives.

Drop us a message if you would like some specific advice about caring for your herbs through the seasons.

The wonderfully aromatic leaves of Pelargonium tomentosum can be used to add a minty fragrance to homemade botanical projects. We also love walking past them in the greenhouse to get a burst of peppermint scent!

Ours are in the greenhouse here at the moment, for a good reason. This tender plant needs protection from the cold and frost, so keeping it under cover helps it through the colder months.

A perfect addition to a scented plant collection.

With its lovely fragrance and interesting uses, this perennial herb definitely deserves some love.

To add a subtle almond like flavour to your fruit and jams, simply add a small handful of fresh flowers to the pan whilst cooking your fruit, let them infuse and then remove them. We recommend starting with a little and tasting it as you go!

And by the way, Meadowsweet is coming back in stock at Hooksgreen Herbs, so keep an eye out to get your hands on this amazing herb.

Let's talk about how to keep your Purrsian Blue thriving.

1. Give this plant a sunny position in your garden, to optimise flowering and growth

2 . Choose well drained soil. Purrsian Blue is relatively drought tolerant, so it doesn’t need frequent watering once established

3. Trimming after the first flush of flowers encourages further growth

4. Bees love these flowers, so let some blooms remain to keep providing a food source for our busy pollinators!

Lemon thyme is a fabulous herb with a fresh citrus scent, evergreen foliage and plenty of uses in the kitchen.

We love the fact that this herb looks just as good in the garden as it does on a plate, alongside the fact that being a perennial means it can be enjoyed year after year.

Let us know if you would like some cooking inspiration for your lemon thyme!

Let’s talk about how to make the most of your fennel.

From the crisp bulb to the delicate fronds and aromatic seeds, there are plenty of ways to use fennel in the kitchen.

Roast the bulb, use the fronds fresh as a garnish or add fennel seeds to dishes for a stronger aniseed flavour.

What's your favourite way to use fennel? Let us know down below!
