Bread in Common

Bread in Common Bread in Common is B arts' Community Bakery & Cafe We don’t use any additives or artificial ingredients. On Fridays we run a Pay As You Feel Cafe 12-2.

We know that food connects everyone, and Bread in Common is our door to connect everyone who steps through to one another, to good food, the arts and lots more in Stoke-on-Trent. Bread in Common was set up over ten years ago because we’re passionate about baking and eating better bread, and believe that Real Bread is something that all of us have a right to enjoy. By real bread we main bread baked

with flour, water, salt, yeast and natural flavourings such as herbs, seeds and nuts. We hate food waste, and that people can't get their hands on food. So we are proud to be in a partnership with Fareshare - an organisation that redistributes surplus food to charities and community projects (such as us). We turn that waste food into meals and distribute the food to anyone who wants or needs it. We use surplus supermarket food to create diverse and creative meals that anyone can come and enjoy - we simply ask people to pay what they feel and can. Your donation covers the cost of our chef, our kitchen team and of the power it takes it cook and wash up. So we like to suggest £5 for a two course meal, but it is really up to you. We have run baking projects all over the city, teaching baking skills and the joy of making bread together. Our legendary mobile wood-fired pizza oven has popped up at many events serving the best pizza you can eat without sitting down- and you can book us too. We cater for special events and conferences, corporate or community lunches and evening meals. We run baking courses so everyone can get more confident in baking at home, and we run community, school and young people’s projects around bread and baking. We are doers. We are a community. We change lives. If you would like to know more please just send us an e-mail at [email protected] - we’d love to see what we can do
or pop in for a lunch and a chat at 72 Hartshill Road, ST47RB

🎉Help us bring our creative cooking and writing project 'The Little School of Improbable Cooking back to Stoke in Summer 2024' 🥗

B arts are taking part in the Arts for Impact campaign via Big Give, which is running now until midday 26 March.

💰Donations given during this time are generously matched by Stoke Creates, meaning whatever you give will be DOUBLED! 💰💰

🧑‍🍳We will be using the donations to run our summer holiday project partnering with community venues in disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Stoke on Trent to run a magical pop-up cooking school! 🪄🍓

During the project children and young people are supported to cook themselves a two course meal themed around a magical dilemma combining fun & cooking skills for children-creating low cost nutritious recipes. About Us

Bread in Common is B arts real bread bakery and programme of Bread Clubs. Bread in Common is based at

72 Hartshill Road Stoke-on-Trent ST4 7RB B arts started Baking Bread, a project to discover, make and share bread recipes from the diverse communities in Stoke-on-Trent, back in 2011. We also found there is a demand for “real” bread, that’s bread made using the best and simplest ingredients, made in stages and risen slowly. So we ran a subscription bread service for a year to develop the audience for real bread. What are Bread Clubs? We know that although people want to learn new baking skills to help feed their families, and make the budget go further, sometimes the biggest barrier is turning on the oven. So Bread Clubs are about bringing people together in community centres and church halls to use a shared oven and bake together. We provide the starting help- some baking advice, help you to organise your bake and some practical stuff ( kit, how/ where to bulk buy ingredients, how to sort out the money etc) and then you get baking. As part of this project we also have a mobile wood fired bread/pizza oven If you’d like to book the oven do contact us at [email protected] What’s in the bread then?

We use organic flours, water and salt. If there is anything more in a loaf it is clearly stated in the description (it’s likely to be olive oil, seeds, fruit, malted grain flakes of wheat or rye) Our bread is made using either a sourdough or a bakers’ yeast with a dose of sourdough, and is given a long proving process, often over night, giving time to develop the gluten and for a good taste.

If you need any information about the allergens contained in any of our products please contact us on [email protected] There are no flour improvers, synthetic chemicals or any other hidden extras. You can find out more about real bread from the Real Bread Campaign http://www.sustainweb.org/realbread/ Meanwhile- support us Buy real bread- either from us or from your nearest real bread makers or get in touch if you want to start a bread club in your area!
