Friends of Johnson Community Hospital

Friends of Johnson Community Hospital The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital is a registered charity - supporting the hard working nurses and auxiliary staff and for the comfort of the patients.

Registered Charity No: 214542 SOME HISTORY

On the 7th June 2014, The League of Friends of Johnson Community Hospital celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Celebration in the grounds of Johnson Community Hospital. The League of Friends of Spalding Hospitals, now known as the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital, was formed by a group of ladies headed by Nellie Fowler and a local bank manager. The aim wa

s to care for the well-being and comfort of patients at the Johnson Hospital and the Mintling Home in Pinchbeck Road, later to be known as the Avalon Ward which was situated opposite the Johnson Hospital. Some years later, the Avalon hospital was re-located to Roman Bank in Spalding and was called the Welland Hospital. The League's aim in those early days was to provide toiletries, confectionery, outings and gifts for patients to make their stay in hospital a little more comfortable. Today, those aims continue, with a trolley shop manned by the friends giving a friendly smile and stopping for a chat. The patients also receive a gift at Christmas and on Mothering Sunday. Johnson Hospital was founded through a bequest in the wills of the Misses Elizabeth Ann and Mary Ann Johnson, daughters of the Reverend Walter Maurice Johnson, and dedicated by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1881. The cost of the building and equipping the hospital was £9044.9s.4d. In 1981, a group of business people launched the Centenary Appeal providing and equipping an Outpatients' Department in Priory Road which was a very welcome and well used facility. In 2010, HRH Princess Anne was invited to formally open the new hospital. She spent a happy time with staff and patients making it a very special day of celebration. The new name "The Johnson Community Hospital" depicts the special relationship with all the people of South Holland. It is "our" hospital where the doctors, nurses and staff are perpetuating the ideals laid down so many years ago. THE PRESENT DAY

The League of Friends is a registered charity - Charity Number 214542 - with trustees drawn from organisations and individuals in the local community wishing to support the hospital. As technology has advanced in recent years, the Friends have raised funds to provide equipment that would not have been possible through the NHS. In recent years, the League has launched appeals for scanners and other hi-tech equipment which have been generously supported with donations from businesses and voluntary organisations within the town and district. The hospital is fully equipped but there is always a need for additional equipment to improve the services and comfort of those attending the hospital. In the first six years since occupying the new hospital the Friends have purchased medical equipment and gifts in excess of £44,000.00 None of this would have been possible without the generous support from donations and legacies from businesses, voluntary organisations and the good people of South Holland and beyond.

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to Hannah for making us feel so welcome and to be a part of such a special day.

Reflecting on a Wonderful Day at the Fenchurch House Care Home Wellbeing Fair

Community and connection are at the heart of everything we do, which is why Carol, Jean, and I were absolutely delighted to be invited to the Fenchurch House Wellbeing Fair. Held on Thursday, May 21st, the timing could not have been more perfect, coinciding with a beautiful, sun-drenched May afternoon. The event took place in their lovely garden, providing a peaceful and uplifting backdrop for everyone in attendance.

The Fair was thoughtfully organised to promote Dementia Action Week, a crucial initiative dedicated to raising dementia awareness, fostering community support, and highlighting the overall wellbeing of individuals and their families. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to support such a meaningful cause.

During our time at the fair, we had the pleasure of chatting with Mrs. Toni Barwell, the owner of Unirose. We learned about the vital services Unirose provides to the community, which focus heavily on care co-ordination and real-time companionship. Their team does incredible work helping people navigate the often complex health and social care systems, assisting with shopping, and accompanying clients to various appointments to ensure they never feel alone.

Of course, no garden gathering is complete without some treats, and the refreshments provided by Fenchurch House were absolutely delicious.

The highlight of the entertainment was a lively performance by Memory Lane. They brought an incredible energy to the garden, capping off their fantastic set with a spirited rendition of Sweet Caroline, which is a firm favourite among the residents.

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to Hannah for making us feel so welcome and to be a part of such a special day. We sincerely hope the event was a tremendous success in spreading vital awareness about dementia and strengthening our local support networks.

Of course, the Friends were delighted to agree to this request. We are pleased to share that the fan is now in situ and running in the Fish Room, helping to keep the space cool and calm for both the children and the nursing staff working hard to care for them

How Your Donations Help Our Youngest Patients

The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital, always aim to support our wonderful hospital staff and improve the experience of every patient who walks through the doors. Recently, we received a special request from the team who looks after our youngest patients.

The nursing staff asked for a floor-standing fan to be used in the Fish Room, which is the dedicated space where paediatric blood tests are carried out. Visiting the hospital for a blood test can be a particularly scary and anxious time for children, and keeping the environment as comfortable as possible is essential.

Of course, the Friends were delighted to agree to this request. We are pleased to share that the fan is now in situ and running in the Fish Room, helping to keep the space cool and calm for both the children and the nursing staff working hard to care for them.

It is often these relatively small purchases that make a massive difference, easing the lives of hospital staff and bringing a little extra comfort to patients when they need it most.

None of this would be possible without the ongoing generosity of our local community. Every donation and show of support allows us to say yes to requests like this one. We are incredibly grateful for your continued kindness.
