I'll be back soon!

I'll be baking again in a couple of weeks, but before I get started,, I wanted to address my absence.

I've bumped into a few of you around Southport and I am continually grateful for the kind words and support I've received 😍

I took some (unexpected) time off due to my health. For those of you who don't know, I've had ME/CFS for over 5 years, as well as PMDD, chronic pain and migraines. At the beginning of 2021 I decided instead of setting a new years resolution, I'd set a one word priority: healing. And I've kept this the priority all year. I'm 29, I've dealt with this for most of my twenties and I won't take it with me to my thirties if I can help it.

In April I began down a number of new paths. I began working with a practioner for nutrition and working through my mould illness after unknowingly living in a mouldy flat in 2019. I also began looking into working with a biological dentist AND I also started studying with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, which has been incredibly full on (I decided to do the accelerated course whilst doing this bakery and healing - I was over ambitious!). I graduate in a little over a month, which has flown by. Healing my community through food has always been my passion, it's why I first opened the cafe and it continues to flow through me in different ways. Over summer I found a biological dentist in London who I really trusted and began a full treatment program with them which has been terrifying, emotional, amazing and transformative. The clinic I went with have been beyond amazing and I've had the best possible care available. And now the amalgam and all the infection is safely gone, my health is leveling up! The nutrition and mould work helped a lot, too. But I have had to address all areas to truly move forward.

This is my story with CFS/ME: Part 1.

Five years ago I was completing my first year of a PhD programme. I was teaching a class of first years, working part time in hospitality, traveling back and forth between Southport and uni, trying to have a social life as a 23 year old, and trying to find time for Andy and my family. It was a lot, too much. And my body reacted with a series of severe UTI's. I went on multiple antibiotics and got all the side effects. Extreme fatigue, acne, weight gain, headaches, nausea, brain fog, pain in my arms and legs, anxiety, panic attacks and much more.

They never went away.

I was first told it was 'only' anxiety. I received counselling on the NHS and was diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder. Of course, learning to deal with the anxiety was useful, but I was still sick.

Then I was told it was a women's issue and that I had PMDD. And left to it, because women's issues are not so important in our society. So that was that.

But in 2018 I had a severe flare up and couldn't move about from bed much at all and was in more pain than usual and the fatigue was all consuming. After the blood tests came back fine I was told I was all good, nothing wrong. But the thing was I was told this info over the phone whilst I was bed bound.

I saw another doctor who suggested I went on the pill (the response I'd heard 1000 times at this point). And I just burst into tears Infront of him. I was 26, I'd been sick 3 years and couldn't accept that this was how my twenties had turned out. I felt so much grief for my body and the life I wanted, I was tired of being gas lit and ignored by medical professionals.

The doctor agreed to refer me to Ormskirk hospital for tests. The doctor there ran ALL the tests. He was actually the only doctor in the past 5 years I've felt heard by and he diagnosed me with CFS/ME and referred me to a gyno as well who agreed I also have PMDD.

This was just the beginning of my story with CFS/ME. The past year especially has been a tough one health wise as my illness has progressed but if you know me, you know I'm a fighter.

It's another beautiful start to the week. I can't get enough of this sunny weather, I don't know about you?

I have a couple of updates for you all ❤️

Firstly, May is M.E. awareness month and I'm really excited that I'm going to be donating a percentage of all orders to an M.E. charity for the entirety of May! For those of you who don't know, I suffer from M.E. and it effects me 24/7. I have moderate M.E. meaning I can semi function, sometimes. I've been sick for 5 years and it has progressed quite a lot in that time. It's why sometimes you see a lot of me on social media and others times very little. You can probably guess how sick I am that week based off that. But so many people are housebound for years of their lives and I am excited to be able to raise some money and awareness for this illness during May. More details on this coming later in the week.

Secondly I am taking a week off baking in a couple of weeks. So to help I thought I'd outline upcoming dispatch days:

Delivery update:
Do you want the good news first or the bad news? Let's go good news shall we...

I'm really excited to announce that from this coming weeks delivery day (April 1st) I will be extending my local delivery zone to FORMBY L37 🎉 It will be a trial for one month initially to see if it is worth me doing, but I'm so happy I can offer you this!

Okay now the bad news 😬 it's not terrible news I just made a little boo boo. I rather optimistically assumed deliveries with royal mail would be unaffected by the Easter weekend. I know, go ahead and roll your eyes at me. I am now aware that royal mail will not be doing deliveries on Good Friday and this really messes with my delivery timetable for postal options. The reality is the cakes won't be their best selves if I post anyway. Do I've decided not to. I considered baking a day early but I have a treatment for my M.E. (chronic illness) on Tuesday and I usually need a day to fully rest afterwards. So I decided the best thing to do would be not to do postal cakes that week. So the next dispatch for postal orders will be April 8th. Any orders placed between now and then will be fulfilled on April 8th. Sorry for fudging that one up - I'm still learning 😬

Spring is finally here! The trees are blossoming and the days are longer. We made it through an extremely tough winter and for that we all deserve to give ourselves a big hug!

For me, spring represents the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm not sure this chaos of the past 12 months is going away any time soon but there are certainly more moments of beauty visible in the near future ✨
