Looking to get back into work or try something new? Discover your transferrable skills

We’re exploring interest in a free 2-hour training session at the end of June or July, delivered by TWICS, to help you recognise and use your transferable skills when applying for jobs.

Getting back into work can feel challenging, especially if you haven’t worked for a while or are changing career. You might be wondering how to write a CV, what skills you can offer, or how to stand out to employers.

This session will help you:
✔ Identify the skills and experience you already have – even from everyday life
✔ Build confidence in what you can offer to employers
✔ Learn how to present your skills in a CV or application
✔ Feel more prepared for interviews

Whether your experience comes from caring responsibilities, volunteering, study, previous jobs or time away from work, your skills matter – this session will help you recognise and use them.

This is a great opportunity if you are returning to work, exploring new job options or thinking about a career change.

We need at least 8 people to run the session, so if you’re interested, please comment here or contact [email protected] or 07769241365

💛 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💛

It's hard to talk about the Round About Café without talking about Shirley. She has been volunteering with us for almost as long as the café has been open and her presence is woven into its identity and success.

Shirley is instantly recognisable for her delicious homemade cakes, quick wit and the good‑natured bickering she shares with Nigel, our Cafe Supervisor. This banter is famous with customers and brings laughter, warmth and a sense of familiarity that keeps people coming back week after week. She helps make the café feel like a place where people belong.

Beyond her humour and baking, Shirley brings deep experience, commitment and care to everything she does. Her dedication to volunteering has been formally recognised with not one, but two visits to Buckingham Palace, a remarkable reflection of the time and energy she has given in service to others.

The Round About Café would simply not be what it is today without Shirley. Her passion, personality and tireless commitment have helped shape a space that is welcoming, joyful and community‑led. She is truly irreplaceable.

💛 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💛

We are delighted to welcome Barbara back as a volunteer after a period away. Even during her time off from volunteering, Barbara remained connected, regularly visiting the café as a customer and continuing to show her support for the space and the community it serves.

Barbara is a key driving force behind the Friends of the Round About Café group and brings with her a wealth of experience from working in the charity sector. She now volunteers her time as Treasurer, using her skills and knowledge to help support the group’s development and long‑term sustainability. Her involvement is invaluable and provides strong foundations for the group’s future work.

Barbara’s continued dedication and willingness to share her expertise make her a hugely valued volunteer who truly deserves recognition.

💛 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💛

Serena is one of our newest volunteers and joined us after being a regular user of the Community Pantry. Having benefited from the service herself, she was keen to give something back and now supports other pantry members with their shopping each week.

Serena is friendly, kind and easy to chat to, helping create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. She takes the time to support members as they choose their items and helps ensure everyone feels comfortable and included. Her lived experience means she understands the needs of pantry members and offers support with empathy and care.

Serena’s involvement highlights the powerful way community spaces can support people to move from using services to shaping and strengthening them, and we are really looking forward to getting to know her better as she continues her volunteering journey.

💛 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💛

Jen is a compassionate and dedicated volunteer who supports Community Pantry members each week, helping them choose their items and making sure they are aware of what is available. She takes time to chat with members, offering friendly guidance and helping them feel confident in their choices.

Jen is especially skilled at suggesting recipes and ideas for using pantry items, encouraging members to take plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to support healthy eating. Her approach is thoughtful and empowering, ensuring people feel supported rather than rushed or judged.

She is full of constructive ideas and is always thinking about how the café and pantry could be improved. Jen regularly shares helpful suggestions, many of which have contributed positively to how the service operates. Her commitment and initiative led to her becoming the Secretary of the newly formed Friends of the Round About Café, where she continues to support the café’s long‑term sustainability and community focus.

Jen’s kindness, enthusiasm and forward‑thinking attitude make a real difference to both individuals and the wider community. She is a highly valued volunteer whose contribution goes above and beyond.

💛 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💛

Gill and John first joined us as customers, drawn in by the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the Round About Café. It quickly became a regular part of their week and soon led to them volunteering.

Gill had volunteered elsewhere before but had not always felt valued. After speaking with Nigel, she felt encouraged and supported to get involved and has loved volunteering at the café ever since. John helps us in many practical ways, including varnishing outdoor furniture and improving shelving in the kitchen.

Volunteering has always been important to Gill and John. They first met 24 years ago while volunteering at the Solent Sky Museum and have since supported a wide range of community projects, including co‑founding a Friends of the Cemetery group which they run for 10 years.

Gill especially values the strong sense of community and friendships formed at the café, often filled with laughter. John enjoys the positive atmosphere and the opportunity to contribute practically. Together, they show how volunteering creates connection, purpose and belonging.

💛 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💛

James has been involved with the café since before it even opened. As a local resident, he was part of the early conversations that helped shape the idea of creating a community café, and he has volunteered with us ever since. His long‑standing commitment and belief in the cafe have played an important role in its success.

Over the years, it has been a pleasure to support James on his journey from unemployment into stable work. Through volunteering, he has built confidence, developed skills and remained closely connected to the community that matters so much to him.

James is full of creativity and ideas. He came up with the original concept for our weekly singing group, which has been running successfully since 2022 and continues to bring people together through music and wellbeing. Music is a real passion of James’s, alongside his love of wrestling, and he brings that enthusiasm into everything he does.

We are proud to display a poem written by James to celebrate the café’s 10-year anniversary. It is a lasting reminder of his creativity, commitment and connection to the café and community.
