When Akins Family Bakers opened in 1984 Barry & Anthony Akins were already experienced bakers. Gaining experience from various bakeries they worked in, including a well known baker in South Shields their Uncle Ernest who owned Hossner’s in Fredrick Street. rtisan Craft baking methods in making products of a superior quality. When Thomas Akins retired as an electrician, he along with his wife Sylvia saw the enthusiasm their sons Barry and Anthony had for baking and supported them in the early days to open Akins Family Bakers

The bakery quickly made a name for itself by selling a high quality range of freshly baked products direct from the shop at the front of the bakery. The shop developed so well, they also opened in Durham city as well as supplying many of the hotels & restaurants and coffee shops in the region. At Akins Family Bakers the team of highly skilled Artisan Craft bakers only use the best ingredients available. Well after 29 years im now leaving to start a new life somewhere else. It's been a pleasure working here and im now leaving it in the capable hands of our wonderful bakery staff to continue serving our local community and beyond. I'd like to thank all our wonderful customers and staff past and present and if cause our bosses Barry and Tony.
