Ever tried stencilling on a cake and it didn’t turn out the way you expected? Perfect stencilling comes down to a few important techniques. Here are 4 things you should always do for clean, flawless results every time:

1. Use the right frosting consistency
Your frosting should not be too thin or too thick. Aim for a consistency similar to room-temperature butter — smooth enough to spread easily while still holding its shape. This applies whether you’re working with buttercream, ganache, or royal icing.
2. Work on a chilled cake
If you’re stencilling with buttercream or ganache, make sure your cake is properly chilled first. Place it in the fridge for about 15 minutes so the surface is firm and set before applying the stencil.
3. Apply and scrape correctly
Spread the frosting evenly over the stencil, then scrape off the excess until you can clearly see the stencil material underneath. This helps create a smooth, sharp design.
4. Do not let the frosting dry
Remove the stencil immediately after scraping. If the frosting begins to dry, it can stick to the stencil and pull away from the cake when removed.

Follow these steps and you’ll achieve neat, professional-looking stencilling every time 😍
