This quiet oasis is the perfect spot to escape and unwind. Drink in the panoramic views as you sit in the comfy living space and make plans for the day ahead. Will it be wild swimming in the River Wharfe at Burnsall? A country walk to a nearby pub for lunch? Paddle boarding? Or just breathing in the fresh air as you relax in the garden and enjoy the nature around you. For those looking for a more
active escape, Howgill Barn offers the perfect base for an outdoor holiday in the Dales, whether on foot or taking to the roads on two wheels. The barn is positioned on a path that leads directly to the River Wharfe and onto the Dales Way, which stretches for 80 miles from nearby Ilkley to Bowness-on-Windermere in Cumbria. Walks such as The Valley of Desolation and Troller’s Ghyl are popular local rambles. Although Howgill sits in a completely rural and unspoilt setting, it’s only 10 miles from the beautiful market town of Ilkley, and 20 miles from the bustling city of Leeds. The villages of Appletreewick and Burnsall are within walking distance and here you can enjoy true Yorkshire hospitality in one of the local pubs. The Craven Arms at Appletreewick and The Red Lion at Burnsall both offer great pub grub in traditional surroundings. For those who don’t want to venture too far, 200 metres down the lane you’ll find the Brownie Barn, home to Love Brownies, whose individually baked brownies have won multiple awards. This welcoming café is a great place for a bacon sarnie, Eggs Benny, avo on toast (Avo-cuddle) or even a champagne breakfast. Or treat yourself to a home cooked lunch with a beer or two. If you’d prefer to make the most of the dark skies and stargaze in front of the fire pit once evening falls, then why not order a pizza from the nearby Brownie Barn and soak up the sounds of nature without leaving Howgill. The accommodation is managed by Lee and Chantal Teal who own and run the neighbouring Brownie Barn. Passionate about Yorkshire, they personally ensure that guests have everything they need to make the most of their visit.
