A wet week in the fields this week but as a team we’ve got all the veg harvested and out to wholesale and retail. Phew! We are a tiny team at the moment on the farm consisting of Hugh, Bronwyn, Nicky and me. But we are getting the veg in and mostly smiling through the January weather. This week we have harvested hundreds of kilos of vegetables including leeks, parsnips, carrots, celeriac and my favourite, the greens 💚. A special weekend for Nicky who celebrates a milestone birthday this weekend, joining the fit, fab and fifty club. Welcome! Happy birthday Nicky and thanks for all you do on the farm, we couldn’t do it without you. Proving that us old girls can get out there and get the job done 💪staying strong and fit is our priority now as we glide into our best years.

A big THANK YOU from Hugh and I for showing up weekly and supporting our veg growing business. As we move into our 25th year here we reflect on what has been achieved and how our business has grown since 2001. We don’t do it alone and are grateful for our hardworking team that helps us bring nutritious home grown organic veg every week of the year from these fields to your plates. Happy Christmas to you all! See you in 2026 , Hugh and Liz

We’ve been harvesting daily for our retail and wholesale customers. These beautiful January King cabbages are off to in Bath today for their lovely box customers. Hugh and I both worked at in the late 1990’s, Hugh as a grower and I ran the box scheme and sold the farm produce at Green Park Station. 25+years later we are still involved in providing nutritious food for Bath customers. Pretty wild really!
These January King cabbages have been through a lot to get to this stage, planting in a drought we weren’t sure if the outcome of the brassicas but they are all big, healthy and abundant! Anyone near Bath check out Middle Ground growers and their outlets.

The season rolls into harvest and we seem to have said goodbye to summer and the dry warm days. Hugh spent months irrigating (from our ponds and borehole) dragging pipe, setting up the reel irrigator, fiddling with pumps…it was never ending and exhausting! The tunnels were easier to control for me although we had to be extra vigilant for pests in the dry conditions.
Some vegetables have done really well, a testament to Hugh’s usual determination😵‍💫😅. Some veg hasn’t done so well even with irrigation, yields are down in some crops and there are gaps where plants just gave up!
The Veg Shed and market tables will be brimming for the next few weeks and we have begun autumn planting. Come and say hi and give Hugh a BIG wave and thanks if you spot him, he’s quite elusive these days, busy in the fields as usual!

Hundreds of cucumbers from the tunnel today. We have a new variety this year called Melen and a few of our old favourites Passandra. We’re keeping the red spider mite at bay at the moment using Spidex, a biological control and the humidity up by over head watering once or twice a week. So far so good 🥒 Now we just need some good creative cucumber recipes what would you do!? 😘

Hugh and the field team getting the winter crops planted. A huge task this season with the dry weather, but as usual Hugh is getting the job done whilst juggling field prep, weeding, planting, admin and watering

I love growing greens and eating greens. I want greens to be the main event on my plate. The spinach is just delicious at the moment, we have been harvesting non stop and are just seeing the ‘real spinach’ out as the next planting of outdoor perpetual spinach gets it’s roots down and gets growing💚. I also love fresh herbs and although we only grow the main three here (parsley, coriander, basil), I am lucky enough to have a fresh supply of everything else from Nicky . Nicky works here on the farm and runs her own fresh herb growing business and cut flowers. Get in touch with her for quality herbs at chef quantities. My Saturday evening Spanokopita had pretty much same amount of herbs to spinach and it was delicious💚🌱🌱💚
