Terry Pratchett was the much loved author of 41 Discworld novels, and many others. He died in March 2015 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, which he described as his ‘embuggerance’.
28th April 2018 would have been his 70th Birthday. In celebration of his life, his amazing imagination and the wonderful books he created, this group of cake and sugar artists have joined together to create works of edible art inspired by his books.
This is Part 1 of the collaboration, with more pieces joining us later in the year for a live display at Cake International. We hope you enjoy seeing our creations and will join us later in the year for Part 2!
‘Cake is not the issue here‘ is a quote taken from the book The Last Continent. It seemed appropriate.
We are grateful for the cooperation of Dunmanifestin Limited, which owns the Intellectual Property Rights of the late Sir Terry Pratchett.
Sally Gardiner: Granny (Esmeralda) Weatherwax is a powerful witch who appears in various Terry Pratchett books. She is thought to probably be the best witch in Discworld and held to be the leader of a community of witches in Ramtops. She lives in a cottage just outside the village of Bad Ass and is a member of the Lancre coven.
Granny is a tall thin woman, probably in her seventies who is quite handsome, though she has a long face. She has no warts on her face and all her teeth still, which she finds very annoying. She has grey hair she wears in a tight bun. Granny is usually wearing a black dress, black cloak, witches hat with hatpins in and hobnail boots. She isn’t very good a riding a broom though she is good at cards. Though she is a very powerful witch she actually doesn’t use her magic a lot preferring to use something she calls Headology which just means she convinces people to think she is using magic to do what she does.
Granny Weatherwax’s character is quite a stern one, I think she would rather be respected than liked. You get the impression from the books she’s like that stern old woman that’s been there, done that and got the t-shirt. She’s past being polite and doesn’t care if she offends as long as whatever needs doing gets done properly. Though the way she acts would give you the impression she is more likely to be a bad person, she definitely knows her right from wrong and will put you in your place if she thinks you’re doing wrong. I think her nature is to be the bad witch but she has too strong a moral centre to allow herself to be bad. She doesn’t do what’s nice though to be seen as a good witch she does what is right even if people don’t like it. She knows what she’s doing, she’s got the experience and intelligence to get what needs doing done and as a result is very self-confident. She’s certainly someone you wouldn’t want to cross.
