Yes, you should write a birth plan. No, not like that.

Every week, I speak to new mums who say, "I don't know why I wrote my birth plan - it didn't go the way I wanted!"

When we talk about it, the reason is clear.
Their birth plan was about the outcome, not them.
It stated the goal, but didn't know how to get them there.

That's when I'd agree with them: there's not much point in that.
It's just a benchmark that will either be met, or not.
And if its a not, well that's depressing.

But as a doula, I need you to know that when a birth plan has a different focus, it can change the way birth unfolds for you.

When you plan, not for processes but for emotions and your brain, you create a template that helps get you where you want to be.
That's where positive birth experiences really begin.

I work with my doula clients to prepare them for this.
You can get a slice of that with my birth planning guide - 'Build Your Birth'.

At some point, you'll need to stop.

Research is great.
Knowledge is empowering.
But too much will overwhelm you.

And once you get to that point, it's really REALLY hard to make a clear decision or to relax.

Every week, I have Power Hours with expectant parents who come to me because of this.

They've got a problem - they've researched it, AI'd it, discussed it with friends, even got a second opinion. They've done all the right things.

But there's no clear answer.
No universally right thing.

And so, despite knowing all they know, they still don't know what to do.

Which is where I, and our Power Hour, come in.
We shift from pros and cons to priorities.
We move away from the universal and into the personal.

In sixty 1:1 minutes, probably for the first time, we stop juggling the data and put this issue into your context.

Could you do this alone? Maybe. But it'd be harder... Your internal monologue would likely creep back in and bring the 'what ifs' with it.

But with me, you're grounded. You're guided. Your in a time slot and safe space to connect to rational, unemotional thinking.

That's what makes a Power Hour so helpful.
Permission to stop.
Structure to think.
Support to decide.

Sound good? I've got slots available this week, so grab yours before it's gone.

People book Power Hours with me because they want help to make decisions confidently: my approach is always the same.

Look at the goal.
Examine the control.
Go from there.

Let me explain.

Humans like predictable, calm, controlled things, so we use our great big brains to figure out ways to make the chaos controllable.

Now, in other areas of life, this works... say, when you're planning a holiday.
It DOES NOT work for birth.

Birth is by nature unpredictable.
Sure we can influence it without doubt, but we cannot control it.

And when we try to, we tailspin.
And go around in circles.
And panic.

Because despite our best efforts to control everything, we feel totally out of control. And that starts a whole other trajectory I don't have time to delve into right now.

BUT GOOD NEWS! There's a way to fix it.
We reframe.

We don't settle for something different.
We don't let go of the dream birth.
We think differently about the chaos and control elements, so that you can refocus on manging something you can actually control and dictate.

Control asserted.
Balance restored.
Calm confidence returned.

That's what my Power Hours exist to do. Fancy it?
Head to my website and book yours. You never know how much a 60-minute chat can change things for you.

So when we apply our usual way of thinking to the problems and decisions we face,

01/06/2026

There's only one right way to do this; it's the way that feels right for us.

Birthing.
Sleeping.
Feeding.
Parenting.

There are a million experts, books, blogs and opinions, each of them existing for a valid reason.

Because of science.
Statistics.
Anecdotal evidence.
Tradition.
Cutting edge change.
Revolution.
Whimsy.

But let me be clear here: these are sources of information, not directives.

When it comes to your baby, you and you alone are the expert.

Listen, read and question, yes.
But when it comes to action, go inward.
Do what feels right.

Because chances are, if it feels good, it is good.

... which is exactly why I create them.

Doula work isn't just massaging your back in labour. It's about giving you what you need to be the very best version of you possible during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

That means giving you really specific things:

- support to figure it out.
- solidarity to keep you going.
- space to be you.
.. and the occasional coffee and flapjack.

Despite these events being so much fun, this isn't why Bump Club and The Nest exist.

They're here because they really make a difference to the journey from pregnant to parent. They've been doing it since they arrived in 2023, and they're going strong.

Want to join the community? We'd love to meet you:

BUMP CLUB
- all stages of pregnancy
- the first Saturday of every month
- (Redruth)

THE NEST
- parents & carers of babies from birth to just-about-crawling
- every Thursday at 1pm
- (Truro)
