Some stories are just too good not to share.

Sara joined us a few weeks ago + after her first few shifts went home absolutely buzzing. She told her mum, Naïma, how much she loved working here + how welcome everyone had made her feel.

So, naturally, Naïma decided to come in one Sunday + see what all the fuss was about.

The next day, Sara knocked on my office door + asked if we were hiring.

I assumed she had a friend looking for a job.

Nope. Her mum.

Apparently Naïma had come in, loved the bakery, loved the atmosphere + decided she wanted in too 😂

+ that, ladies + gents, is how we accidentally ended up hiring our first ever mother-daughter duo.

I love this story because I think it says more about the kind of place we’re building than I ever could. It’s the people who turn up every day, look after one another, make each other laugh, work bloody hard + create somewhere that people genuinely want to be part of.

bagels + schmear has never just been about bagels. They’re a pretty important part of it, of course… but this business has always been about the people. Our team is the heartbeat of everything we do. They’re the reason this place feels the way it does + they’re the reason it continues to thrive.

Also, I need to give Naïma a special mention because she became the first person to make me full-on belly laugh during an interview.

Twice.

I can’t wait for you all to meet them both.

Five iced drinks for the heatwave. Four new. One that simply refused to leave.

🧊 ICED TOASTED COCONUT LATTE 🧊 ICED SALTED HONEYCOMB LATTE 🧊 PEACH ICED TEA SPRITZ 🧊 RASPBERRY + HIBISCUS SPRITZ 🧊 ICED HAZELNUT + WHITE CHOCOLATE LATTE

The last one isn’t new. I did think about retiring it but you order so many that taking it off the menu felt like a genuine risk to my personal safety. So it stays. For another season.

We’ve tested the new four more times than we probably needed to + hand on heart, they’re some of the best iced drinks we’ve ever put out.

Now for the mildly disappointing bit.

Three new bagels were meant to land alongside them. Tested, signed off, ready to go. Then I tried one again yesterday morning + it fell flat.

My rule is simple: a new bagel doesn’t go on the menu unless it makes me + the team say, “f*ck me, that’s unreal”

Yesterday it got more of a polite nod.

So the bagels wait until next week, when every one of them earns its place.

The drinks, though, are ready. It felt silly to make them wait another week while the bagels get their act together + the weather carries on with whatever this is.

The women who show up.

Even when they’ve got a million things going on in their personal lives + still bring their energy, their graft + their humour every single day.

Some are mums.

Some are juggling a hundred responsibilities outside of the bakery.

All of them keep + have kept this place moving, helping it thrive + keeping the laughs coming when we need them most.

I’m proud that bagels + schmear is somewhere their girls can come + be surrounded by powerful women, seeing first hand what hard work + resilience looks like.

bagels + schmear wouldn’t be what it is without the women behind it.
