'Loaf Tanning Salon' is usually used as a criticism of supermarkets that falsely claim their bread is 'baked in store', when in reality they're only defrosted and reheated ('tanned') onsite. But there's nothing fake or false about these happily sunbathing loaves!

All our loaves* are made by hand here in the bakery, and baked fresh on the day they're sold. The same goes for all our sweet sourdough buns and cookies. Nothing par-baked, no additives, just tasty, straightforward food!

All made with organically-grown UK grain, and all vegan friendly to boot🌱

*(with the exception of our rye tins, which prefer a rest overnight to help them set)

This week is , a world-wide celebration of the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

To show our support, we're taking part in NEMI Teas 🧡
campaign, which asks bakers to create a special product to showcase one of their premium tea blends.

If you've not come across Nemi before, they're a fantastic company that uses proceeds from tea sales to fund TRAMPOLINE cafes, where they train and employ refugees to help them find future work. All the teas we serve in the bakery use Nemi, and you may have enjoyed their Earl Grey or Chai blends in a slice of our loaf cake.

For , we've chosen to use Nemi's lemongrass and ginger tea to create a limited edition swirl. These are filled with a sweet lemongrass, ginger and coconut paste, baked and brushed with a lemongrass and ginger syrup, before being finished with a drizzle of white chocolate and some toasted coconut.

All proceeds from the sale of these lovely sticky buns will go to Nemi's nominated charity Breadwinners. But they're only around for a short time so don't hang about!

We are beyond chuffed to have won the Muddy Stilettos | Devon award for best food producer for the SECOND year in a row!🎉

Voted for by YOU, our customers, this means so much to us. As small business owners, we often find ourselves worrying whether what we make is good enough, and whether anyone values the care and hard work we put into the things we bake. But this is a real vote of confidence, so a huuuuuge THANK YOU! to everyone who nominated and voted for us 🙏

The regional awards take place next month, then we wait and see if we made it through to the nationals 🤞🤞🤞

NEW BREAD CLASS DATE! 📅

We've added a new bread class date to the website for Sunday July 19th. We've had SO MUCH interest in these courses this year, which brings us a lot of joy because we have so much fun teaching them. And from the feedback we get, it sounds like you really enjoy them too - just check out this lovely review from one of our most recent participants ☝️

The class runs for a full day, with breakfast and lunch included, and covers all the fundamentals, from creating a sourdough starter, to mixing, shaping and baking a variety of sourdough breads.

You can find more info and book via our website heylbakery.com. If you're interested and have any questions, please DM us or drop us an email at [email protected]

Next week we're excited to be taking part in NEMI Teas 'Bake for Courage' campaign in support of Refugee Week.

The aim of the campaign is to show solidarity with the refugee community and raise awareness of some of the amazing organisations, like Nemi, who are dedicated to empowering refugees and equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to integrate and thrive. This is a cause we care deeply about, particularly in light of the current political tensions in this country that have seen innocent refugees unfairly scapegoated. We believe now is a time for unity and compassion, not hate and division.

As part of the campaign, we'll be using one of Nemi's signature teas in a special sweet bake, with some of the proceeds going to the charity Breadwinners.

We'll be sharing more details throughout next week, so stay tuned....

Much love,

Team Heyl

It's a busy weekend here at the bakery! In addition to the Makers' Market .cafe.plymouth, our little cobbled corner of Plymouth is home to !

The two day festival will see arts, poetry, performance and procession in homage to those most familiar, occasionally pesky seagulls that call Plymouth home. Not to be left out of the fun, we've made some little Gull shortbread biscuits with earl grey tea, white chocolate & lemon. These sit alongside a bounty of bakes to make you forget about the grey weather and inject a little joy into your weekend.

Then, on Sunday, we'll be back Food & Craft Market from 10am. The roads surrounding the yard have reopened so the crowds can flow freely, but it is strongly recommended that you avail yourself of the excellent public transport options available, or use the park & walk option from Stonehouse Creek carpark to ease congestion in the Yard, where possible.

See you soon!

What springs to mind when you think about "local food"? A pasty, perhaps. A cream tea. Fish and chips.

It might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but we'd humbly submit our Mushroom Flatbread as one of the most local lunches you can enjoy in Plymouth on a grey old Thursday.

The star of the show is the Oyster mushrooms from .farm.house, grown right here in Plymouth in the former C103 nightclub as part of 's ongoing rejuvenation of Union Street.

They're piled onto a sourdough base made with organic grain grown and milled in the South West, alongside our signature silken tofu sauce enriched with fava miso, tarragon and thyme.

All brought together by your favourite local bakery 😘

These flatbreads have been a mainstay of our menu for years, and we never get tired of them.
