‘I just want a medium size cake…..’

OK let’s fix that to something we can both understand.

A ‘tall cake will generally serve twice the portions as a ‘normal depth’ cake as we recommend cutting taller cake in half first to make cutting the portions easier.

The cake pictured is OUR ‘tall’ 6 layer cake. But this means nothing as everyone’s layers can be different depths, so let talk hight instead …..

6” tall x 6” round = up to 28 (a bit more if square)
6” tall x 8” round = up to 56 (a bit more if square)
4” tall x 6” round = up to 14 (a bit more if square)
4” tall x 8” round = up to 28 (a bit more if square)

Save this so you’re ready when the dreaded question comes….
‘What size cake would you like?’

Fear of the unknown, especially when it comes to ordering a cake can put the most confident person under pressure.

Don’t worry we got you and the first step is easy.

DOOM SCROLL PINTEREST!
I’m kidding (sort of, we’ve all been there 👀)

Find one or two inspirational pics from the internet (Google images, Pinterest, Safari etc) so we can see what style of cake you are potentially looking for. Then send them over or bring them into the shop.

It’s doesn’t have to be perfect (we prefer it not to be with all our cakes are bespoke to you. Who really wants a copy of what someone else has already had, your worth more than that and your cake should be about you not someone else).

Step one done ✔️

Then we take you through the rest of the process. No trick questions, and IT’S OK TO NOT KNOW! It’s our job to help you figure out.

We’ll help you understand :-
What size cake is best for your needs,
What flavour you would like (Spoiler it’s not just fruit or vanilla)
What theme, design or style feels right
and what depth suits the design best (never been more relevant these days this one).

And everything in between.

There’s no stupid questions, there’s no shame in not knowing. Just take a breath, start with finding a pic or 2 and let’s take it from there.

Save this post as a confidence boost when you’re starting your cake journey and send me that pic you’ve got on your phone to get started.

Let’s talk about common problems our clients face that we make disappear.

The biggest by far is the fear of the unknown.

‘What if they ask me loads of questions’?
‘What if I don’t know what I want’?

You don’t need to know everything (that’s our job), we just need a simple starting point.
The occasion, a colour scheme, theme or just a little about the person who it’s for, gives us a great starting point allowing us to then guide you from there.

Next up, the size debate.

We’ve all seen the posts recently where someone asks for a ‘normal size’ cake, or ‘the same as the picture’ only to be made to feel stupid.

It’s true that you can’t tell the size by a picture, (especially the AI ones) but as a baker, with many years under my belt, there’s always tell tail signs or a simple question that resolves this issue without the embarrassment.

Another is feeling uneasy about making payment, especially if you can’t make it into our shop.

We hear you, so we upgraded our card machine to allow us to send a secure pay by link straight to your phone. No reading our card number out, know one looking over your shoulder, you activate the link when your ready and we get a message when payment is received. ✔️

Last one for now is, what do you do when it comes to collection or delivery?

Cakes are expensive, delicate works of art so we understand when feeling nervous picking them up from the shop.
But what about what comes after that? Getting it secured in the car, driving carefully to the venue, getting it back out of the car, up the steps, through the door, to the room, out the box and finally safely onto the stand or display…..(your sweating just thinking about it). Not to mention the time involved when you’re attending the party and still need to get ready yourself. 😱

Too stressful, too much at risk, too little time….
Not too much for us.
(Plus if something does go wrong, we have the experience to fix it, so no need to make a tearful phone call or mad dash back to the shop).

What other parts of the cake ordering process do you worry about?

Have you ever heard of temperature shock?
It’s what happens when your cake goes from one extreme temperature to another. Here you can see that we left a ganached cake in the fridge far too long between coats which resulted in moisture (or dew) forming on the outside of the cake.
Like walking on grass first thing on a beautiful spring morning, the moisture in the atmosphere has settled onto the surface, making it wet.

3 enemy of cakes

Moisture 💦
Extreme heat 🌞
Extreme cold 🥶

We’ve all seen cakes stored in fridges to stop them from melting but we often miss the part after where the cake comes out of that cold environment and hits the heat of the car or room. Cutting your cake where it look really hard to get the knife through and there’s not a crumb or buttercream smear in sight.

Why….

Because cakes are made up of quite a lot of fats which harden in cold temperatures. From high fat buttercreams, (you know, the ones that look like silk going on, yep that’s because it a high butter to sugar ratio), to the cake mixture itself, we couldn’t create our beautiful cakes with out it.

But have you ever tried spreading or cutting butter straight out of the fridge? That’s what it’s like to cut your cakes when chilled and not allowed to come back to room temperature before cutting, but thats when this moisture occurs. If this happens to your cake it can result in hours of work being destroyed as the moisture eats away at your design. Colours can run, toppers can flop and your stress levels, well there through the roof.

We only use our fridge for a limited time and store our cakes in a cool (but not cold) room to prevent temperature shock. All our cakes come with storage instructions but more importantly we work really closely with our clients (and the weather app) to advise on the best options for their needs. If the weather is going to be a scorcher and your not in a room with air con we wouldn’t advice you to have a buttercream cake because the chances of disaster are so high that it’s not worth the stress of you seeing your perfect cake in a puddle.

Working with us is knowing your in safe hands.
