Slate, Sea & Skimming: A Geology Tour of Easdale with — Stone Skimming Championships Special

Join for a unique geology adventure on Easdale Island — timed to coincide with the annual Stone Skimming Championships! This special tour blends hands-on geological exploration with the fun of one of Scotland’s most iconic community events. As the skimmers compete for the perfect ripple, you’ll uncover the ancient forces that shaped Easdale and the Mid-Argyll Slate Belt that made it world-famous.

What to Expect

🪨 Uncover the Story of Easdale Slate

Explore the Easdale Slate Formation, part of the Dalradian Supergroup — metamorphosed over 500 million years ago.

📜 Industrial Geology & Quarry History

Hear how Easdale was once the heart of the Scottish slate trade, with thousands of tons quarried and exported worldwide.

Explore how quarrying shaped not just the geology, but the history and communities of Easdale and neighbouring islands.

🧠 Stone Skimming Meets Stone Science

While skimmers compete for the flattest, roundest, fastest stone, you’ll learn what makes a good skimming stone geologically:

Shape and flatness from bedding and cleavage planes

Density and hardness from slate mineralogy

Surface texture that supports multiple skips

Test out your geological insights by selecting your own “skimming slate” from permitted pebble areas.

🦴 Hands-On Geological Investigations

Sketch geological sections and learn how geologists reconstruct rock histories in the field.

This tour is perfect for:

Participants in or spectators of the Stone Skimming Championships

Anyone curious about how everyday rocks become geological treasures

⏰ 12:00 to 13:00 or 13:30 to 14:30

🎟️ Duration: 1 hour

Throwback Thursday to when I was a child oyster farmer!
Hugo and I had just put a few trestle tables and oysters on the beach on Herm Island as an experiment to see how they grew. We practically knew the oysters by name there were so few!
That was 41 years ago 😳

Top finds whilst grading today 👍🏻 Apart from a ❤️ shaped oyster, there is a Butterfish hiding underneath the seaweed, an urchin and a load of winkles.

My visitor at low tide this afternoon - a Lion’s Mane Jellyfish. I was very brave in my waders and gloves 😉😂
How beautifully it moves in the water

In case you didn’t manage to be in Oban for the parade to the Highland Games today, this is what you missed.
Do you see why I had to get my deliveries done earlier than usual!!

A beautiful start to the tide and its Oban’s Highland Games today too.
I did my oyster deliveries early as I didn’t want to get caught up in the parade up to Mossfield. The parade is spectacular, all the kilts and pipes! And on a day like today even better.
Fresh oysters delivered to Watts the fishmonger, Waterfront Fishouse Restaurant, Inver and The Pierhouse Hotel.
Hope you enjoy them oyster lovers!!
