For the first video in our new Newcastle, County Down series, HomesNI met with James from The Cookie Jar, also known as Mourne & Bread 🥖🥐

This fantastic family-run bakery has been serving the people of Newcastle since 1965. It all started with James’ great granny and her famous wheaten bread recipe — and from those humble beginnings the business has continued to grow through the generations.

While they’re still renowned for their delicious wheaten bread, their counters are packed with a huge range of freshly baked treats that have become favourites with locals and visitors alike. In particular, their sausage rolls have built up quite a reputation.

In fact, James told us that after a hike in the Mourne Mountains, there’s nothing better than making your way back into town and treating yourself to one of their famous sausage rolls — and having sampled them ourselves, we’d have to agree!

A wonderful local business and the perfect way to kick off our visit to Newcastle.

We have all butter croissants and apple/rhubarb crumbles in the shops this morning alongside all our other delicious items. Hopefully the rain stays away, but whatever happens have a great weekend everyone.

We are hiring, we are looking for someone to come and help in the bakery. To work in our small team, helping to make our delicious range of breads and pastries, also packing bread and ancillary work. Typically working from 5.30am-1.30pm Mon, Tues, Thurs & Fri, and 5.30am to 9.30am Wed & Sat.
