W. Potts & Son New Mills We are a family run bakery producing a wide range of speciality and traditional breads and cakes serving our community for over 120 years

Our family has been baking in New Mills for over 120 years. The shop is named after my great-grandfather Wilfrid and my grandfather Wilfrid Jnr being the 'son'. My parents Ian and Susan took the shop over from my fathers parents Wilfrid and Eveline and now run the family business with my sisters and myself. We pride ourselves on producing the finest quality breads and confectionary, trying new ide

as to keep ahead of the latest trends. We sell our goods in our traditional shop and also supply some local pubs with various breads. We have recently gone back into making celebration cakes using modern and traditional ideas. We are also able to cater for parties such as christenings, children's parties, office parties, funerals etc. We look forward to seeing you all soon.

Today marks 66 years since we lost Wilfrid Snr. Born 19th August 1881 to William and Elizabeth Potts, he died August 15t...

Today marks 66 years since we lost Wilfrid Snr. Born 19th August 1881 to William and Elizabeth Potts, he died August 15th 1960 four days short of his 79th birthday.
He lost his sight to glaucoma but that didn’t stop him baking or mending cars…..he was fully blind in the photo yet could still rebuild a car!! He taught his son Wilfrid Jnr mechanics as well as baking. In his twenties, before he lost his sight he paid a bond to a mechanical engineers in Manchester. He later became a foreman electrician at Witworths Armouries during the First World War. After the war he went back to baking full time moving into our current shop in 1930 on his son’s 9th birthday, until February 1960 when his health deteriorated.

Wilfrid Potts Snr 19th August 1881-15th August 1960…..a good man, a true man and a real man 💙

A little family history for anyone interested….

Ernest Boyle,

Corporal 39173. 4th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment.

Died of wounds 11th April 1918. aged 30.

Son of D. J. Boyle, of New Mills; husband of Mary Boyle of 4, Lea Street, and a father of two.

A junior partner in the building firm S. D. Boyle (the firm who built many buildings in New Mills including the Library). He was a well known musician, Ernest had for seventeen years played in the towns annual performance of "The Messiah" at the Town Hall.

Connected with The Primitive Methodist Church.

Had been in France for eight months when he was taken prisoner on the 10th April died the following day. Commemorated Tourcoing (Pont-Neuville) Communal Cemetery-Nord.

Ernest’s dad Daniel Boyle was brother of Samuel Boyle who was Ethel’s dad….Ethel being the wife of Wilfrid Potts Snr the name above our door.
